Rise and Fall of Languages
“The lecture, on the other hand, has provided a more thorough, and perhaps, more novice-oriented view. Such view examined the details in which new languages, or the dialects of a language, may come into being as a result of diffusion. What I have always been puzzling about was the evolution of well-documented languages like English: how can a language evolve when it has a standard form? Well, loanwords due to ineffective translation are a suitable alternative, and idioms born out of cultural context may lead to further variations. Dr. Crystal certainly did his fieldwork (though not as noble as going to New Guinea or the Amazon), just as Dixon recommended. This image of a flexible, bendable English is presented to naturally evoke the pride of each dialect user. Simple. (Also, communication increases diffusion. Both authorities mentioned this.) Another thing I liked about this is the ‘accommodation of accents’. It converges with my experience of speaking a ‘more familiar’ accent when talking to Cathy (the tone is most severely accommodated).”
