Reach the Challenger Deep
Fred
The Marianas Trench is the deepest trench in the world. It's
also the deepest part of the earth. It is located in the western
Pacific Ocean. The Marianas Trench is about 2550 kilometers long.
It reaches a maximum-known depth of about 10.91 kilometers, that's
35,800 feet.
Only three persons successful reached to the bottom by deep-diving
submarine. The first two men
My friend Scott, the hero is a 12 year old boy. He bore in Beijing,
China. He likes exploration since he was a little boy. He usually
goes mountain climbing or fishing. He went on a trip to the Sahara
Desert with his parents when he was only seven! His parents support
him. They often buy Scott the necessity for exploration. Three
month ago, Scott watched a program about the Marianas Trench. It
said that the Marianas Trench is the deepest part of the world. It
also said that Don Walsh and Jacques Paccar are the first two men
who dive into the Marianas Trench. So Scott had an idea -- dive
into the Marianas Trench and break the record.
Scott must prepare many things for the trip. The first thing is a
deep-diving submarine. Fortunately, Scott's father worked in a
factory which makes submarines. So Scott hired a submarine called
Deep Sea Challenger. Deep Sea Challenger was a 7.3-meter long
deep-diving submarine. It was designed to reach the bottom of
Challenger Deep. Expect this, Scott also need many warm clothes and
many... chocolate! Why? Because it's very cold in the deep sea,
also in a submarine. Chocolates was the best food to keep him
warm.
At 7:00 AM, 26 March, 2012, Deep Sea Challenger was put down by a
research vessel called Ice Dragon where the waters of the Marianas
Trench. Then Scott walked into the submarine and started to dive.
It took three hours to reach to bottom. The depth was 11,012. Scott
broke the record which made by Don Walsh and Jacques Paccar! At
3:30 PM, Deep Sea Challenger surfaced, Scott got a big
welcome.
Scott met many difficulties during the trip. When he got to the 200
- meter - deep - water, the main searchlight of the Deep Sea
Challenger extinguished. So he could only use the side one. When he
got to the 2000 - meter - deep - water, the temperature became
cold. He must eat many chocolate to keep warm. Suddenly, a terrible
thing happened. A giant whale hit the submarine and broke the radio
installations. So he couldn't communicate with the Ice Dragon. But
Scott didn't give up. Finally he reached the bottom. The depth was
11,012 meters. But more difficulties came. When Scott's submarine
floated up, the Sonar range finder of the Deep Sea Challenger
suddenly stopped working. It meant that the Deep Sea Challenger may
hit the rocks in the sea at any time. But finally, he succeeded.
Scott became the youngest person who reaches the bottom of the
Marianas Trench.
New World Record
Peter
Eddie set up a new world record on March 25th 2010, and that day
was Eddie's birthday, so it was an unusual day. Eddie was the
youngest person to arrive at the deepest place of the world-the
bottom of the Mariana Trench by himself. He was born in 2000, so he
was only 10 years old then. It took him just over 10 hours, and he
dived 22 nautical miles, so it was shaking news.
Eddie likes sailing very much. Eddie started sailing when he was
five years old, so he has been learning sailing for five years. He
was taught by his uncle who is a navigator. Eddie started by
driving a small submarine. He trained for a year and sailed many
nautical miles. Eddie wanted to arrive at the bottom of the world,
because he wanted to set up a new world record. He also read a book
about the bottom of the world- the Mariana Trench, it said the
Mariana Trench is a beautiful place and it is the deepest place of
the world ocean. He thought he could see a lot of fish.
Eddie had to do a lot of preparation before set out. There is no
fresh water at sea, so Eddie had to make sure that he had enough
for the whole trip. Eddie also took a lot of tinned food in case he
was hungry. Eddie likes reading very much, so he took some books.
The thing he missed most was KFC's hamburger and a soft bed. It
would get very cold and dark at night in the sea, so Eddie had to
make sure that he had searchlight and warm clothes. He also needed
some oil for his special journey because 22 nautical miles is very
long.
Waves are very important for pangolin. Sometime, the wave would
bother Eddie, so it was hard to steer Pangolin, but sometimes the
waves would help Pangolin to dive very fast. The huge waves would
push Pangolin very far. But when there were no waves; Eddie's
submarine would dive very slowly. At other times, the waves would
be very huge. They would push the submarine very far, so Pangolin
would dive very fast.
Eddie needed a wonderful submarine for his special journey. The
type of submarine he used was a U-26IIA. Eddie helped to design it
himself, and he named his submarine Pangolin. Pangolin was a heavy
submarine; it was Eddie's eleven years birthday gift and was made
from special material so that it could dive very fast. It needed
strong waves and motor to boost.
Eddie's driving route is very sample. Eddie started his Mariana
Trench trip in China. First he would sail to the Mariana Trench,
and then he would dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Eddie
only had one stop during his journey-the middle part of the Mariana
Trench. Eddie's uncle sailed near him in another submarine in case
he met trouble. Eddie would finish as soon as they got on land. The
journey was more than 22 nautical miles.
Eddie had to do lots of jobs on the boat. Like cooking, Eddie's
cooking skill was very good, so he could cook tasty food. He also
needed to clean the submarine, because it was dirty. When the
submarine went wrong, Eddie needed to repair it. It was not easy to
get a wonderful night's sleep, when Eddie was diving by
himself.
After a year of getting ready, Eddie finally got sail. During his
trip, Eddie kept a diary on the internet so that other people could
read about his adventure. Eddie also saw a lot of things, like some
ting fish, some colorful corals, but the most impressive thing is
that a big shark which wanted to eat Pangolin. Fortunately, because
Pangolin was made of special materials, the shark just went away.
Eddie and his uncle were sailing the same way, but they were often
quite far apart, like once Eddie didn't see his uncle for five
hours. They kept in contact by computer and speaker.
Eddie also needed to relax. Eddie could only rest for a little
while each time, so when Eddie wanted to relax, he listened to rock
music and played computer games with his uncle on the
Internet.
Eddie was rally lonely at the time. Eddie really missed his mother
and he wanted to eat Haagen-Dazs, because he was a little bit
hungry. His tinned food had been eaten by him so he told his uncle
that he wanted a Haagen-Dazs, and his uncle promised him that when
they got on land, he would buy him a Rum Raisin Haagen-Dazs. When
Eddie heard this news, he was excited.
There was no one to meet them because they were at the bottom of
world, but, by the way, Eddie finally finished his special
adventure and set up a new world record. Congratulation!
Eddie!
A Wild Ride
Bill
The micro friends went on a water adventure. They made a raft
out of pencils and started a wild ride. The current was strong.
Their raft hit a fence and broke. Max, Cat and Tiger jumped onto
the shore in time but Ant landed in the middle of a pond.
Max turned the dial and became big. He ran
home.
Then, Tiger and Cat jumped into the plane. Max drove the plane flew
in the air. When they flew to the middle of the river, a black
thing jumped out of the river. A big monster ate the plane. (The
monster was a variation flying fish) ''What's the matter?'' yelled
Tiger. ''We are doomed!''Cat said loudly than ever. The fish was so
heavy that the plane would fall down. Max showed his
resourcefulness at this emergency. He threw a big stone to hit the
fish's head. The fish fell down. And the plane landed safely. When
Tiger and Cat got off the plane, they shouted, ''Ant, Where are
you?'' nobody answered. Tiger and Cat walked around the pond.
Suddenly, Tiger squeaked ''Cat, look, Ant is there.'' The Ant was
looking them too. ''Oh, thank you, Cat and tiger.'' ''You are
welcome, Ant. There is too dangerous to sit here. Let's
go!''
A Record-breaking Trip

On 3rd May 2012, Nancy broke a world record! She became the
youngest person who swam across the English Channel by herself. She
was only 13 years old. It took her just over three months. She swam
more than 15000000 miles. On 3rd May 2012, Nancy broke a world
record! She became the youngest person who swam across the English
Channel by herself. She was only 13 years old. It took her just
over three months. She swam more than 15000000 miles.
Nancy was born on 1st April 1999 and she lived in Beijing China.
Nancy started swimming when she was seven years old. She was taught
to swim by her sister. She trained for over a year and swam many
miles. She swam more than 1000 miles an hour. She often said that
practice make perfect. 2011, a 16-year-old girl swam across the
English channel all by herself. It was a new world record. Nancy
wanted to beat this record by herself. Many people feel that she is
sure to succeed.
Nancy started her English Channel trip in English coast. From here
she swam to Dover coast. Nancy's sister who has trained Nancy for
years set out with her in a small boat. She watched Nancy anxiously
as she swam the long distance to England. She expected that Nancy
could beat this record. On the first day, Nancy was so excited that
she swam 5000miles.Her sister told me that Nancy intended to take a
short every two hours. She had something to drink but she didn't
eat any solid food. On the second day, the weather was very bad so
Nancy swam slower. You might think that there is nothing to look at
in sea. But Nancy saw lots of things such as dolphins, fish, corals
and so on. She said that it was the most beautiful sea world she
had ever seen. She loved the sea very much.
Three month later, Nancy finally arrived in the coast. She was very
tired but very happy because she set up a new world record. She got
a great welcome. About 30000 people came out to meet her and
Nancy's friend held a party to celebrate it. They were very happy.
Now, Nancy wanted to be the youngest person who swims around the
world and she said that she will practice harder than ever. I wish
that Nancy's dream can comes true. She will be a good swimmer. Make
sure you look out for her in the news or follow her blog.
A Wild Ride -- Got Together Again
Joy
The micro-friends went on a water adventure. They made a raft
out of pencils and started a wild ride. The current was strong.
Their raft hit a fence and broke. Max, Cat and Tiger jumped onto
the shore in time but Ant landed in the middle of a pond.
''What can we do?" Tiger asked sadly.
''Don't you see something in pond?" answered Cat.
They looked around carefully but they only saw their reflections on
the surface of the pond which was calm as a mirror.
Suddenly, they heard FOOTSTEPS which made them feeling scared more
than ever. Then a young voice came: ''Dad, I saw a fish." A girl in
red shoes ran to them. Seeing the red shoes, Cat had a good
idea.
They made a strange noise to let the girl found them. Then they ran
as fast as they could to make the girl followed them. Suddenly,
they jumped over a rock but the girl was too exciting to see it, so
the girl was tripped by the rock. Then they took her shoes away and
carried it into the water as quickly as possible.
By the ''shoe-raft", they found Ant in the middle of the pond.
Going through innumerable hardships, the four micro-friends got
together again.
A Wild Ride
Athena
The micro-friends went on a water adventure. They made a raft
out of pencils and started a wild ride. The current was strong.
Their raft hit a fence and broke. Max, Cat and Tiger jumped onto
the shore in time but Ant landed in the middle of a pond.
The giant shadow was coming closer and closer. It was a huge fish.
Being hungry, the fish wanted to eat ant. "Ant!" yelled Cat loudly.
"Take care of that big fish!" But Ant didn't hear. Looking around
the pond, Max wanted to find something to hit that big fish.
Picking up the stone nearby as soon as possible, Max threw it to
the huge fish. But the stone was too small to reach the fish, so it
was still come to Ant. "Poor Ant," groaned Cat, "how can we save
him, Max?" "Eh, let me think about it..." When they were arguing,
the fish opened its big mouth. "Aaagh," yelled Tiger loudly, "Ant's
doomed! We can't see him forever!" "Don't worry," said Cat
confidently, opening her watch, "Look! The green dot is still
shinning." "Max, how can we save Ant?" yelled Tiger, "I can't
wait!" "Calm down! I'm thinking." said Max angrily. "I have two
ideas. First, it was still raining, so, nobody is in the street. We
can turn the dials on our watches, and then go back to our den to
build another raft. The other is that Ant can turn the dials, and
then went out the small island." suggested Tiger. "The first one is
good, but it is much too late." said Max. "The second one can't be
happening, because Ant can't hear us. So we can only choose the
first idea." said Max.
Turning the dials on their watches, the micro friends became to
normal size. They ran as fast as they could and turned the dials
again to go back their den.
Max looked around at their den. "Oh, no! We don't have lots of
pencils; we only have a few." "It doesn't matter." Said Cat, "We
can build a small one, but we must be quick. If we slow down, Ant
might be in danger." So the micro friends built the raft more
quickly than before.
Half an hour passed, Max, Cat, Tiger finished their new raft. They
put it into the water. Cat opened her watch, "Ant is safe. The
green dot is still here. But where is Ant?"
They climbed on to their raft. Fast as a flea, Max, Tiger and Cat
landed on the small island in the middle of pond. "Ant, where are
you?" "Ant! Can you hear?" yelled the micro friends. "Yeah,"
groaned Ant, he climbed out of the grass. Then he saw Max. "Hi,
Max. Look at the island; it was great and fantastic!" said Ant
happily. But Max didn't answer. "Oh, why do you come to the island?
Do you have the problem as well?" "No, we don't. We come to the
island to get you back to our den." "Why do you come to rescue me?
I'm safe, and I am happy to land here. I want to stay at here all
the time, there are full of exciting things on the island." "No,
you can't stay here. You must go back!" yelled Max, "It is too
danger to stay here, there are lots of dangerous things on the
island. If you don't go, your mother must be angry and worry about
you." "But the island is too interesting, so... " "Ant!" shouted
Max, "You are too selfish to think about your parents!" "Oh...I'll
go with you. Though the island is so interesting, family always is
the best. Can I take something that I collect?" "No problem. Let's
go!"
Now the micro friends were in their den. They were talking about
the trip they had today. "It was really a bad day." They said all
at
once.
