【Chapter 9】
①(Laura and I amuse ourselves by watching
for(expect&wait even it’s
last short time)
the green flash which comes at the instant
the sun disappears below the line of the horizon. This does not
happen every day, for sky must be entirely clear of cloud
and(表转折)
clouds seem very liable to(likely to很可能)
gather along the path of the setting
sun(, but we are as pleased as children
when our game succeeds). Laura claps her hands. Only a
second does it last, that streak(一丝,一线)
of green light; we
wait for it while the red ball, cut in half as though by a knife,
sinks to its daily doom(horizon地平线). ②(Then come the twilight(暮色)
colors of sea and heaven (we have
discovered the fallacy(错误)
of saying that darkness falls suddenly in
these latitudes, at any rate on sea level), the winepink width of
water merging
into(渐变成)
lawns of aquamarine(草绿色), and the sky a tender palette(调色板)
of pink and
+ N.] But the green flash is our chief
delight.
‘crème de menthe(薄荷绿)
, ' says
Laura.
‘Jade, ' I
say.
‘Emerald(艳绿色)' says Laura. 'Jade is too opaque.
'
‘Vicious viridian(墨绿色), ' I say, not to be outdone(不愿认输).
‘You always did lose yourself in the
pleasure of words, Edmund. ③(Say green as jealousy and be
done with it(stopping
‘I have
never known the meaning of jealousy).'
【liable to do】:likely to do很可能做
We are all liable to make mistakes when we are tired.
区别:liable to sth.可能遭到/liable for sth.:responsible by law负法律责任
1.
2.
【merge into】:to fade or change gradually into something else
Twilight merged into darkness.
Outdo: do more/better than
Do intelligent women need to understand that there is a limit to how far they can outdo and outshine their husbands?
【green as jealousy】:green with envy, very jealousy
(“green” alone means very/extreme envious)
I was absolutely green when I saw his splendid new car.
二、Paraphrase:
1.
P: There is a joint between the wide expanse of winepink and strips of bluish-green water…
2.‘Vicious viridian,’I say, not to be outdone.
P: 句子中Vicious viridian意思是very intense bluish-green color,浓重的蓝绿色或者墨绿色;not to be outdone意思是refuse to admit inferior不服输
3. You always did lose yourself in the pleasure of words, Edmund.
P: You were always attracted by the pleasure of words and sometimes neglected something else, Edmund.
4.
It is too green that are so easy to let others envy it.
