【Chapter 9】

①（Laura and I amuse ourselves by watching for（expect&wait even it’s last short time） the green flash which comes at the instant the sun disappears below the line of the horizon. This does not happen every day, for sky must be entirely clear of cloud and（表转折） clouds seem very liable to（likely to很可能） gather along the path of the setting sun（, but we are as pleased as children when our game succeeds）. Laura claps her hands. 一、生词：

【liable to do】：likely to do很可能做

二、Paraphrase：

1.   …the wine-pink width of water merging into lawns of aquamarine.

P: There is a joint between the wide expanse of winepink and strips of bluish-green water…

这里使用了暗喻metaphor的修辞手法，用lawns来表现strips of bluish-green water

2.‘Vicious viridian,’I say, not to be outdone.

P: 句子中Vicious viridian意思是very intense bluish-green color，浓重的蓝绿色或者墨绿色；not to be outdone意思是refuse to admit inferior不服输

P: 这里是双关（pun）的修辞，It is too green that are so easy to let others envy it.最后Edmund的话是一语双关（pun），一方面体现出海水的绿，另一方面体现他的sensitive，他知道还有另一个人喜欢着劳拉，所以不愿意让劳拉看出自己的“妒忌” ，所以矢口否认自己知道什么是jealousy。

　　“裴翠色，”我说。

　　“鲜绿色，”劳拉说，“裴翠色太暗了。”

　　“墨绿色，”我不想输给她，又说了一句。

　　“爱德蒙，你一咬文嚼字起来总是那么忘乎所以。干脆就说绿得发青叫人嫉妒好了，别再争下去了。”

　　“我可从来不知道什么是嫉妒。”
