The Duchess of Croydon – three centuries and a half of inbred arrogance behind her – did not yield easily. 17.(Springing to her feet, her face wrathful, gray – green eyes blazing, she faced the grossness of the house detective squarely.) Her tone would have withered anyone who knew her well. “You unspeakable blackguard! How dare you!”
*inbred:(breed)天生的,内在的internal inherent
* squarely:(directly)大胆的,直接的,坦率的She spoke squarely on the topic of power abuse.她大胆地揭露这些滥用职权的人。
*self-assurance= self-satisfication自负,自我满足:have a swelled head自以为了不起;
e.g.:His air of self-assurance and somewhat loudly bearing would have frightened me had it not been for his warm and hearty handshake.
*You unspeakable blackguard:
◆The police said to the judge, “I apprehended the alleged perpetrator.”
◆In the bar the policeman said to his colleagues, “I collared this creep.”(我抓到了那个兔崽子)
Smith I am desirous of exploring your feelings on the lecture.”外籍教师听了不禁为之一愣,然后说道:“Your English is too beautiful to be true.” 他解释说,此句不宜用于口语,应改为“I'd like to hear your views on the lecture.”或“May I have your views on the lecture?”
◆I am desirous of exploring your feelings on the lecture.
◆I'd like to hear your views on the lecture.”或“May I have your views on the lecture?”
*I am to blame:你对我的指控属实。( Guity as charged.
