小说主要讲的是一个“警探”对一位公爵和公爵夫人实施敲诈的故事。讲的是有一天晚上，公爵带着他漂亮的女朋友开着他高贵的jaguar（捷豹车）去赌场赌钱，并且赌赢了100美元。公爵夫人随后找到了赌场，知道了这个消息后她异常愤怒并且迫使他马上回家。他们在回家的路上撞死了一个女人和她的女儿，公爵和公爵夫人随后肇事逃逸了。这起事故大大超出了他们的意料，他们也倍受心灵的折磨；事发之后他们住进了一所酒店，奥格尔维警探找到他们的时候发现两人都非常紧张。随后奥格尔维警探又在他们的捷豹车中找到了与车祸相关的一些线索，（车子前的照明灯破了，装饰环也不翼而飞）他怀疑这两个人就是犯罪凶手。但是奥格尔维探长没准备将此向警方透露，而是选择跟他们进行了一次秘密谈话。下面我们就来为大家深动的解析这篇非常具有艺术价值的小说-----blackmail。

　　“你们这套房间布置得倒挺讲究的呢。”欧吉维慢条斯理地从口中拿下雪茄，敲掉烟灰，然后将烟蒂扔向靠右边的一个装饰性壁炉，但他失了准头，烟蒂掉到地毯上，他也不去管它。 公爵夫人的嘴唇绷得紧紧的。她没好气地说道，“我想你该不是为谈论房间布置到这儿来的吧。”
