Chinese grammar--The difference between 事情; 事件and 事故

一、“事情”是就一般的、普通的生活中的活动或社会现象而言的；“事件”、“事故”则是指生活中特别的活动或社会现象而言的。

“事情” refers to general or common happenings in life or social phenomena. “事件” and “事故” refer to particular happenings in life or social phenomena.

二、“事件”通常指已经发生的历史上或社会上不寻常、不普通的大的事情。例如：

“事件”usually refers to unusual or uncommon big events having happened in history or in society. For example:

政治事件    历史事件    重大事件

水门事件    核泄漏事件    卢沟桥事件

三、“事故”则特指在生产、工作、交通中等发生的意外的灾祸。例如：

“事故”usually refers to unexpected accidents or disasters happening in production, work, or transportation. For example:

据说，这场火灾事故是由一个烟头引起的。

他进入工地时，没戴安全帽，才发生了这次恶性事故。

酒后开车容易发生交通事故。

四、“事故”通常有人为的因素，自然灾害一般不用“事故”。例如：洪水、地震、台风、冰雹等，虽然是灾祸，但是不能用“事故”。不能说洪水事故、地震事故、台风事故、冰雹事故等，因为它们是大自然中的自然现象，没有人为的因素，这些现象要称为“灾害”。

    “事故”usually involves man-made factors. It cannot be used to describe natural disasters. For example, though flood, earthquake, typhoon, and hailstones are disasters, we cannot use “事故” to express them. We cannot say “flood accident”, “earthquake accident”, “typhoon accident” or “hailstone accident”, because they are all natural phenomena in the nature, without man-made factors. Those phenomena are called “灾害( disasters)”.
