In the morning my mom
drove me, along with my two huge luggages and two slightly smaller
ones, to the school. It was the moving-in day for all the
non-senior athletes, mathletes, and debaters, so the entire school
was filled with cars and people. The first thing I did was to go to
the main circle to register. Then I went to my mailbox and
collected several things, including my telephone number and
everything. The most exciting part came after I left the post
office: I was going to get a school-issued Macbook
Pro.
I thought I was going to
have an used one, but it turned out that I got a brand new Macbook
Pro with retina and Mountain Lion system. It was so freaking cool,
and I just couldn't wait until the basic instruction was over to
really try out the thing that I had wanted for my entire high
school life.
After I got my computer I
went to my dorm, which was probably the largest dorm on campus,
Buehler. I had already known that my roommate was Anna, a day
student, so I was surprised to see that she got a bed and a desk as
well. Buehler got huge rooms, and the two posters that I had
brought was clearly not enough. There was too much more space to
fill, and I really think I should order some posters from Amazon to
make my room look less tidy.
My mom helped me unpack
for about an hour, and we headed to the dining hall before the Head
of School was to give speech to new students and parents. The
dining hall wasn't really as amazing as I had expected, but the
salad bar was legit. Interesting enough, they had Chinese food for
lunch as hot meals. I got some noodles and a large bowl of salad,
with my favorite tuna fish and
Hotchkiss mozzarella cheese, which was super
satisfying.
After lunch was a speech
given by the Head of School, Mr.Mckenzie, and it was for the
purpose of getting us familiar with several important school
faculty members. I really couldn't remember any of them (I tried,
but I failed, obviously), and I decided that there were many other
occasions in which I could get to know them, so no worries at
all.
At the end of the speech,
the headmaster told us to meet with our advisor after we left
chapel, and I was fortunate to have found out that my advisor was
Mr.Iannuzzi, or Charlie, if you had followed my other articles. I
couldn't believe he had known that for such a long time but didn't
tell me. He told me that the school thought that he was already
really familiar with me and my circumstances in every way, so they
asked if he wanted to be my advisor and he said yes. When I told
other students that my advisor was Charlie, they got so jealous and
they were all like "he is my favorite faculty member at
Hotchkiss".
A senior brought me to
his office, and I found two other students and their parents were
there already. He would be advising eight students this year. Those
two students apparently didn't know him before, so he did some
basic introduction and his outline for this year's advisory group.
After that I got to meet with my college advisor (whose name I
still do not know), and along with Mr. Iannuzzi we had gone through
my schedule, and we decided to get me into a higher level math
course, and add an AP physics class.
I feel like all the
advisors are not worried about whether I can fit in and catch up
with my study AT ALL. They seem to be pushing me all the time; at
first I decided to take three APs only, but now I have five. They
also make sure that I am taking the highest level of anything, and
they are all trying to make slight changes to my course selection
so that it would look good on my college application. That is
something that I have not expected, and I definitely appreciate all
of this too.
In the afternoon I did my
first pre-season math team practice with many other students. We
were basically just doing some simple math quizzes (but fun!) which
were all related to each other. It wasn't competitive, but more of
a group work. I happened to know two girls on the team who also
lived in Buehler, so we went changed and dinner together. At five
thirty we all went to go hiking on Lion Head, a small mountain near
Salisbury. It wasn't very high, and I got to chat with other
returning students along the way. We got a great view on top of the
mountain, and we had lollipops and everything. All of them were
pretty neat.
At night I just played
with my new laptop and tried to figure out all things worked.
Several of the girls on my floor came to my room and said hi, so we
chatted a little bit and visited other people's rooms. I wasn't
really familiar with any of them, but their visits gave me more
confidence in fitting into the group as a coming Upper
Mid.
I was really tired right
now after all the things I had done today (and more to come
tomorrow!), but it's nice to finally be
here.
Good
night.
