After being extremely disappointed by a mediocre Marquis de Calon (2ND wine of Calon Segur) 2006, I turned to Burgundy reds for salvation.
And I was so enlightened by this delicate, sophisticated little Volnay!
A pale black cherry “robe” pleased the eyes at the first glance, and a nose that resembled the fresh forest floor of spring time drew me further in. Oh, the pure, piercing minerality reminded me of a cool brook running over mountain rocks! So intense yet so poised, it revealed itself in stages: crushed raspberries and cherries, aromatic herbs such as parsley and mint, and hints of withered rose petals adding more intrigue!! A sip - gentle tannins caressed the palate while the lifting acidity and mineral backbone carried the delicious whole to a persistent and rounded finish.
What a delicacy! "What a beautiful, attractive country girl", I whispered!
Volnay 1er Cru Les Champans 2007 by Domaine Joseph Voillot.
A vigneron of heart, Jean-Pierre Charlot gave this bottle to me as a gift at the end of my visit to his domaine. When I drank this wine, I was thinking of the man who had made it, his passions and worries, the plots of vines that he showed me and cared so much, his winery and cellar, as well as our conversation on wine-making and the world of wine. A wine that brought me back in time, back into beautiful memories.
Yes it is true - it may not have the depth of Chambertin, the nobleness of Romannée, or the complexity of Musigny. But it is honest, pure and elegant. It speaks to your heart. It offers so much pleasure.
It is the little flower that I would pick up from the countryside and feel so happy
It is the little wine that I would drink every day and feel grateful that life is so beautiful.
