以 -ic s 结尾的学科名称数概念是相对的: 实事求是原则有用。用作学科名称是单数，其他情况下可以用复数。
某些以 -ics 结尾的学科名称，如 physics (物理学）， mathematics (数学）， mechani cs (机械学），optics (光学）， acoustics (声学）， politics (政治学）， statistics (统计学）， eco nomics (经济学）， linguistics (语言学）， athletics (体育学）， tactics (兵法）等。
Physics is an important subject in middle schools.

物理学很重要，所以开设在中学。
Acoustics is the science of sound.

声学作为学科，研究的是声音。
Mathematics is the study of numbers.

数学所研究的是数字。
Tactics is an important study for the soldier.

战术学是很重要的学科，有利于士兵作战。
Athletics is a required course for students of all grades.

田径是必修课，涵盖各个年级。

但若这类名词表示“学科”以外的其他意义时可作复数。
My mathematics is/are rather shaky.

我的运算能力很不靠谱。
Athletics have been greatly promoted at this college.

体育运动（技能）得到了很大提升的是这个学院。
The acoustics in the new concert hall are faultless.

谈到音响效果，这个音乐厅的无可挑剔。
The tactics employed in this campaign were above reproach.

谈到战略战术，这场战役是无可非议的。

The economics of the project are still being considered.

围绕经济实力和经济价值，这个项目还在反复思考之中。
