补语 (complement) 分为主语补语 (subject complement) 和宾语补语 (object complement) 。

主语补语通常与系动词连用，形成系补关系（又叫“系表关系")'表示主语具有某种身份、特征、性状等。
[1] Peter seemed (to be) an ideal person for the job.

彼得似乎是个理想人选，适合这个工作岗位。
[2] She was all smiles when we went in.

她满脸笑容是在我们进去之时。
[3] This mixture can continue in this state for a month.

这种混合物可持续这种状态达一个月之久。
[4] You can rest assured that we will do our best.

你只管放心就是了。我们会全力以赴。
[5] His only wish is to be a doctor.

他唯一的愿望是成为一名医师。
[6] I was all attention (= very attentive) at the moment.

我全神贯注的就是这个时刻。

动词有宾语但意义不全时需要增加一个成分以补足其意义，这成分叫“宾语补语＂，成为“复杂宾语" (complex object) :
[1] He proved himself an outstanding fighter.

他证明了自己是一位杰出的战士。
[2] I hold you responsible for the damage.

我要让你承担损失的责任。
[3] We found the house empty.

我们发现房子空空的。

[4] Don't leave him waiting outside in the rain.

别让他呆在外面淋雨。

[5] We think it our duty to heal the wounded and rescue the dying. (我们认为救死扶伤是我们的职责）最好改译为“我们认为我们的义务是治病救人。”

[6] I wish it to be understood that what he did has nothing to do with me. (我希望得到理解，他所做的
与我无关 .）最好改译为“我希望大家理解的是所有他的行为不关乎我。．”

[7] We regard/look upon him as ourbest friend.

我们认为他是我们的挚友。
[8] He expressed himself as satisfied. (他表示满意．）最好改译为“他已经表明自己很满意了。”
[9] They often mistake me for my brother.

他们经常误以为我是我大哥。
[10] We would choose him (for/as) our leader.

我们可能选他当我们的领导。
[11] Don't take me for a fool. (别拿我当傻瓜。）最好改译为“别把我当傻瓜。”
