The Meaning of Thinking:“Learning how to think” really means learning how to exercise some control over how and what you think. It means being conscious and aware enough to choose what you pay attention to and to choose how you construct meaning from experience. Because if you cannot exercise this kind of choice in adult life, you will be totally hosed. …The really important kind of freedom involves attention, and awareness, and discipline, and effort, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them, over and over, in myriad petty little unsexy ways, every day… It is unimaginably hard to do this, to stay conscious and alive, day in and day out. ” [David Foster Wallace (1966-2008), 2005, Keynon, Commencement Speech.]
“Treat my book as a pair of glasses directed to the outside; if they don’t suit you, find another pair; I leave it to you to find your own instruments, which is necessarily an instrument for combat” (Marcel Proust as quoted in Foucault (1977 [1972]), 208)
Enlightenment must be conceived as an attitude, an ethos, a philosophical life in which the critique of what we are is at one and the same time the historical analysis of the limits imposed on us and an experiment with the possibility of going beyond them. Foucault 1984, What is Enlightenment? (My summary of Foucault’s What is Enlightenment?: “Enlightenment is the spirit of Permanent Critique.”)
“An intellectual exists in order to draw attention to the principles of revolution.” Satre as quoted in Kirtzman 1988, xiii
Greater than the tread of might armies is an idea whose time has come. Victor Hugo
“The definition of the alternatives is the supreme instrument of power.” E. E. Schattschneider. The Semi-Sovereign People. 1960.
"Man's capacity for justice makes
democracy possible, but man's inclination to injustice makes
democracy necessary."
"The sad duty of politics is to establish justice in a sinful world." Reinhold Niebuhr.
“The past is never dead. In fact, it is not even past.” ----William Faulkner, Requiem of A Nun.
“The best that can be achieved is to know precisely what [the past] was, and to endure this knowledge, and then to wait and see what comes of knowing and enduring.”----Hannah Arendt, Man in Dark Times.
True freedom is not to escape from power (escaping is an impossiblity). True freedom lies with critically examining power (including one’s own) and resisting unjust power consciously.
