17Four years ago, when Ted was sixty years old, he retired. He had worked in a restaurant for forty-three years. He left and returned to his home village. There he bought a small piece of farm and planted a lot of apple trees in it. He takes good care of them and this year there are plenty of apples in the trees. The old man is very happy.

But these days the old man has been worried. Nearly every night his garden is broken into and quite a few apples have been lost. So he decided to do his best to catch the thief himself. Last night he sat in a tree and carefully watched who would come and pick the apples. Later at night. Ted was so tired that he went to sleep. Suddenly some noise woke him up. The noise came from a big tree. He went there quietly and saw a boy standing under the tree with a bag full of apples. At once he recognized it was Tom who lives just next to him.

"How can you do that, Tom?" the old man became angry and shouted. "I'll tell your father about it!"

20The sun is the closest star to earth. It takes 8 minutes for the light from the sun to reach our earth. The distance from the sun to earth is one astronomical unit(天文单位). It is about 150 million kilometers.

Energy from the sun heats the earth's surface. The earth would be too cold for life without our star's heat energy. Other stars are too far away to give the earth enough heat energy for life. Scientists wonder if there is life near other stars.

Our sun is an average size star. It appears like the largest one, because it is the closest star. Some stars are smaller than our sun. Very small stars are called dwarf stars. Some of them are no larger than our small planets. Some stars are much larger than our sun. The largest stars are called giant stars.

Not all stars are the same distance from the earth. The different distances make some giant stars appear very small. Astronomers use light-year to talk about distance in space. A light-year is the distance the light travels in one year. The star, Alpha Centauri is the closest star besides our sun. It is over 4 light-year away from earth. It takes light from this star over four years to reach the earth.

26 If you like looking at more places or people, travel by bus. Buses don't go very fast in the centre of London. In general, London buses are red and double-deckers (双层汽车). They have a driver and a conductor.

When you have got on the bus, the conductor says, "Tickets, please!" You say where you want to go; he tells you how much to pay; you pay him and he gives you a ticket. A lot of London bus drivers and conductors come from the West Indies.

There are other sorts of buses in London, too. The red single-decker buses have a driver but no conductor. You pay the same price for a short journey as for a long journey.

In 1969 two Americans got to the moon in a spaceship. They got out of the spaceship and walked around for a few minutes. It is too hot in the day and too cold at night. And there is no air or water on the moon. We all know living things need water and air.
