A short story about
“3Js”
in

J1
→J2 J1 was greatly moved by J2’s
attitude. As a return, he decided to hand over all of his reference
materials accumulated up to that time, all of the program
lists, all program
documentations,
…dealing with
SMS to J2’s group. In short, J1 had nothing left in the scope
of SMS research, and he would never be able to make any further
effort in this field again.
J1 thought he would have enough
room to pay attention to, especially in designing an autopilot for
ship’s steering using
“modern control
strategy”, but he did
not notice sufficiently that this decision made his
future research more tough ,full of uncertainty and
unpredictivity.
J2 has been successful after
3~4 year time struggling. Their first
SMS was completed in 1997, the system was
really impressive by combining the precise mathematical model of
ship maneouvring and the three dimensional dynamic images of ship
motion. The commercialization of SMS proceeded
smoothly.
In 1999, when J1 retired
from his position as the dean of LSC, he recommended J2 to take
over his job, that opinion was approved by
the authority of
DMU.
J2
→J3
J3, younger than J2 for
7~8 years old, graduated from Zhejiang University,
is a clever man. He was selected by J2 as member of his research
group. Quickly, J3 was sent to Australian Navigational University
to make visiting study, and J2 had made quite a comprehensive
schedule for J3’s reference. Then J3 became
J2’s “second in command”, responsible to
software development. J3 presented his
intelligence and ability in his job, which won J1’s appreciation to
a great extent.

It was in1999, J2 did not do
concrete
“leading work”
any more, J3 became the
practical head of SMS group. Once upon a time, J3 talked to me when
he returned from a business trip harvesting a big contract
: “ Some
body asked me an embarrassing question:
‘what does J2 do in the SMS
research?’ ”, he
continued: “to this question, I can say nothing, J2 did not do anything
in fact.” His unfair
evaluation about J2 was quite beyond my
understanding. Why people forgot other one’s
help so quickly? I asked myself.
Such an environment and atmosphere made J1 to
leave from the group at last to create his second
battlefront—This is life!
J2’s new field
Now J2 is working in a new
field—safety assessment for water ways and ports
regarding to ship maneouvring. He has demonstrated himself for
second time as a strong man, he is appreciated by the new users of
his “new
products”.
J3
Now J3 is the top leader of
SMS Group and LSC, enjoying all the research results on SMS.
However, where the results come from? Who has made contributions to
them? This matter is worth
thinking.
Nobody is perfect. Recently, a hearsay made me
astonished: J3’s skills on computer is not as high
as people may think of, in fact, he has even difficulties in typing
a word document….. All the work are being done by his employees,
this is in some way like what J2 was doing before. So I am
wandering if there is such a possibility that J3 would go the
similar way as J2? I do not hope so.
