Rebekah Brooks has been arrested by police investigating allegations of phone hacking and corrupting police officers by News International staff, two days before she is due to be questioned by the Parliamentary culture media and sport committee.

She was being questioned at a London police station on Sunday after surrendering into custody at about noon.

Mrs Brooks, 43, resigned as chief executive of News International on Friday after pressure to explain her role in the phone hacking scandal grew intense.

She has said consistently that she knows nothing about the interception of voicemail by people working for the News of the World.

However, in 2003, she told a select committee that “we have paid police for information in the past”, though she later clarified her remarks to say that she had no knowledge of specific corrupt payments.

John Whittingdale, the chairman of the culture media and sport committee, which is due to question Mrs Brooks on Tuesday afternoon, said that he was taking legal advice as to whether she would be able to turn up now that she had been arrested.

“It does change the picture. We’ll see,” Mr Whittingdale said.

He had previously said that because of her resignation from her job as chief executive of News International, she was likely to be questioned separately from her former employers and close friends, Rupert Murdoch, chief executive and chairman of News Corp and his son James.

Mrs Brooks’ arrest adds to a deepening crisis that has engulfed Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp, the Metropolitan Police and David Cameron, the prime minister.
