Dear Editor,

How are you?  Glad to know that the "Advice" Column of your paper is inviting applications for a fictitious host / hostess.  I would like to be engaged to do so.

I am a Junior Grade Three student, a healthy 15-year-old girl.  My name is Song Xueying.  I love the English course.  And I like your paper "English Weekly" very much.  I like to read each page of your paper.  In my everyday life, I often try to speak English in or out of the class.  I like to talk about the materials in the newspaper in English with my teacher and my classmates.  I like the first page "Yesterday Once More" best.  And with my English teacher's help I often try writing English compositions.  I have kept writing English diaries for nearly one year.  Of course, I've been meeting with many difficulties.  But I feel it a pleasure that my teacher and classmates all say that I write well and I have a gift for writing.

I have a bright and cheerful disposition.  I like making friends and I have many friends.  My friends all like to communicate with me, too.  I study well.  Classmates sitting near me often ask for help with their study.  Whenever they ask me, I often give them satisfactory explanations patiently.

I like computers as well as English.  I have quick fingers in typing and dealing with words skillfully.  I like surfing on the Internet.  And I have the super capability of using the Internet.

To be the fictitious hostess is my dream.  Dear editor, please look over my personal information carefully and choose me as one of your followers.  I'm looking forward to hearing the good news and working under your leadership.

2.   A Notice

    Attention, please!  The New Year's Day is coming.  To celebrate it we must clean our school completely.  According to the weather forecast, it will be sunny and warm the day after tomorrow, on December the 30th.  So the school is due to have a general cleaning on the very day ---- this Friday afternoon, from 2 to 5:30.  All the students must participate in the labor.  This is the plan in details:

    The new Junior One pupils and Grade Two clean the Teaching Building;  The Third Grade clean the Office Building;  Senior One clean the Library;  Senior Two clean the Science Lab;  And finally the Computer Room and the Language Lab are cleaned by the Senior Three students.

    In the course of working, please pay more attention to the rule "Safety First".  Do you job carefully and do not do it for fun.  And you have to economize on water.  In the end, I hope everyone works well and makes our school campus clean and tidy to welcome the coming of the New Year!

    Attention, boys and girls!  Now I'll broadcast a piece of notice.  The New Year's Day is coming.  There will be a general cleaning from two o'clock to five thirty on Friday afternoon.  Every student must take part in it.  Details of the plan go like this:

    Junior One and Two pupils clean the Teaching Building;  The Office Building is cleaned by Junior Three students;  Senior One clean the Library;  Senior Two clean the Science Lab;  The Computer Room and the Language Lab are swept by Senior 3.

    Pay more attention to some details:  There are a lot of things to do and it's very important to work in the Teaching Building.  The banisters and windows must be swept clean, using wet cloth where necessary.  Any rubbish must not remain on the stairs, especially in every corner.  In the office, the teachers' desks and chairs must be swept clean and their teaching books and the students' exercise-books should be placed in good order.  The bookshelves in the library must be swept clean and the books should also be placed well.  Warning!  Be more careful when you are working in the Computer Room, you must not use wet cloth to mop the screen, or you may be in danger！  

    Do good jobs, we will have a nice environment and we will have a good time on the New Year's Day!  That's the end.  Thank you for listening.

4.     Interests and Hobbies

    Everyone has his hobbies and interests.  Someone's hobby is reading.  Someone's hobby is writing.  Someone's hobby is watching TV.  Mine is listening to music, dancing and doing sports.

    Music can let me get relaxed.  When I learn by myself at home for a long time, I often listen to pop music a while for a change because it is enjoyable and a most wonderful thing.  Each time when I see a music programmed on TV I would always stop doing other things to be absorbed in it.

    Dancing can model my shape.  All of us know that girls all like pretty.  Five years ago, I learned how to dance.  It was a beautiful time, and I learned a lot happily.  But now I am a Grade Three student, the general knowledge course study is the emergency; I cannot learn dancing any more.   That is a regretful thing for me.

    There are many kinds of sports for us to choose.  I like basketball, although I can not play it well.  I like badminton, too.  And I prefer to play it rather than play basketball.  And I can beat all the other girls in my grade.  But I am sure I can play basketball as well enough as badminton.

Now study is the first thing of all.  But some fellow students don't like the study of general knowledge courses.  I think “All roads lead to Rome."   If they can't pass the entrance to the senior middle school, they can learn to sing,   learn to dance like the "super girls".  They can play basketball, football or do other sports like the athletes in the Olympic Games with honors for our country.

 

5.    Interests   and   Hobbies

    We all have our hobbies and interests respectively although we work as bees.  You know how colorful the life is.  When we pay attention to our study all day, having lessons and learning by ourselves, we may feel very tired.  At that time, we should relax ourselves.  People have different ways to get relaxed.  For example, when I am free, I always draw some pictures, like birds, flowers and objects.  Drawing makes me happy.  I think that pictures can make my eyes open.  I can find many things in them.  I'm a sports fan, too.  And I can do well in them.  Sometimes I play badminton.    Sometimes I play table tennis.  And football is my favorite, although I am a girl.  I don't care really that anybody says anything.  And nothing can stop me from doing what I want to do.  People say "Everything always begins with much difficulty", but I don't agree to it.  I think you can do everything if only you want to.  When I hear something interesting about, I am always on the go.

Interests and hobbies make us think our life is colorful and interesting.  But we should connect our interests and hobbies with the social reality.  Thomas Alva Edison was a great American inventor.  He had 1,093 inventions all his life.  Most of them have changed the world greatly.  He always had so many new ideas.  He would keep trying out different ideas until he invented what he wanted and he never gave up.  It is interests that made Edison successful.  I am as clever and diligent as Thomas Edison was.  Interests and hobbies are gold.  They are also a rainbow in my heart.  I'm sure my gold interests and hobbies will make me happy and let me go on.

 

6.      Interests   and   Hobbies

I think everybody has his interests and hobbies, but different people have different interests and hobbies.  Good interests and hobbies not only react people's capabilities and ideals, but also have important influence to our everyday life and study.

    Interests and hobbies are our good friends.  They are very useful to one person to grasp his knowledge and skill.  They can also lead to great inventions and discoveries.  Thomas Alva Edison, the great American inventor was so much interested in science that he invented a large series of inventions in his whole life.

    I am very interested in English.  When I was about seven, I asked my mother what the word "news" meant.  But my mother said that when I became a middle school student and learnt a lot about the English language, I would understand it easily. From that time on, I set my mind to study English well and become a translator when I grew up. English is my most love.  I love the English language.  And I love to study English and I love my English teacher because he gave me the flame to the English world.

    My hobby is reading.  I like reading all kinds of books, both in English and in Chinese.  We have history books recording past events, geography books dealing with the earth, math books centering on space and number, language books studying the means of ability.  In a word, we have various books about different things in the world.  And I am just like a bookworm on all of them.

    People often say that gold and silver are the most valuable things in the world but I must say that reading books is more valuable than anything else because books can give us knowledge and knowledge gives us power.  The Chinese saying "To open a book is always beneficial" also clearly shows us how good it is to read a book.  So from reading good books we can gain companionship, experience and instruction.

    Good books are our faithful friends.  They increase our satisfaction when we are happy and reduce our pain when we are sad or lonely.

    Good books are our teachers.  They tell us different kinds of knowledge and teach us the truth, science, literature and philosophy of the life.  They are both instructive and inspiring.

    Good books are also our shield.  They tell us what is good and what is evil.  And only good books can protect us from the evil and guide us to the good and greatness. So we must read good books and keep off bad ones.

    I have to learn as long as my life is continued.  My life is limited while the knowledge is boundless.  So I must make the best use of my time to read more good books and to acquire more knowledge and learn English, the foreign language well.

    My most love is English.  My ideal is to become a translater.  I am still young.   I know that reading will bring me success. My ideal will come true and I am sure I will be able to accomplish my ideal.

 

7.  My Interests and Hobbies

    Everyone has his interests and hobbies.  But everyone's is different from others'.  Do you want to know my interests and hobbies?  Listen to me carefully.

    I am a student in the Experimental Middle School.  I like reading books.  Books are my best friends and I have a lot of books.  When I read a good book, I always forget the time to eat meals.  But reading a good book makes me happy and at the same time I can get knowledge.  I can use the knowledge to write something.  I also like writing diaries.  Every evening I like to write down the things happened in the day.  I have kept writing the note from Grade Four in the primary school.  It can help me to remember the important things in my life.  I like my notebook.

    Second, I like giving a speech.  In September the 10th, the Teachers' Day, there was a lecture meeting in our school.  I was lucky enough to give a talk to stand for my class.  Ever since then, I have been interested in lecturing and I want to be a lecturer when I grow up.

    Last, I love English.  Although in my fellow students' eyes I am weak in English, I know that English is very important in the future world, I have to learn it well.

   This time you have known my interests and hobbies.  I want to know yours.  Would you like to tell me?

8.       My    Life

I’m a girl.  My name is Rose.  I’m an American.  I come from a family of three people----my parents and I.  My parents are working in China now.  So I have to go to school in China.

I’m newly in the school.  It is a high school.  All is new.  All is strange.  I’m very lonely.  I have no friends, but every student and teacher is very friendly to me.  They teach me how to speak Chinese.

I get up at six o’clock in the morning.  Then I wash my face and brush my teeth.  At six twenty we do morning exercise.  I began reading at six forty.  We usually read English or Chinese.  We have breakfast at seven ten.  We have four classes in the morning from seven forty to eleven forty.  We have lunch at twelve o’clock.  In the afternoon, we have three classes from two thirty to five thirty.  Then we have supper at six o’clock.  Evening classes last from seven o’clock to nine o’clock.  After evening classes we go to bed at nine thirty.

I feel this kind of life idle and unpleasant.  I am very nervous.  I have no time to play at all.  What can I do?  I want to go back to my country.  But I can’t.  I hope the headmaster will have a think of our teenagers' needs and can arrange some play time to make us free.  So we can do sports or go in for different activities.

9.    Students and Teachers

    I heard that a lot of students talk about their teachers.  Some students like their teachers very much, but some students dislike them or even hate them.  They think that their teachers didn't like them as they always criticize them.  So there are often unhappy things between students and teachers, to lead a failure in teaching and learning.  How to make students get on well with their teachers?  I have five ways to tell you.  Please look at them and try to follow them.

    ⑴You should respect your teachers.  Your teachers are your elders.  It is good trying to make friends with your teachers.

    ⑵You should take care and support your teachers' work and then study hard to get a good result.

    ⑶To teachers' shortcoming you should tell him or her honestly and don't criticize or laugh at  your teachers.

    ⑷You should calmly treat your teachers who once mistook you wrongly----First, you should think that the teacher must have made a mistake. Don't take too much care about it.  Generally speaking, teachers criticize somebody for something error.  You can think it over in what case you were criticized.  After some time, you can go to your teacher to tell the real things, perhaps the teacher will realize that he or she has made a mistake and say "sorry" to you.

    ⑸You should try to connect with your teacher to know each other better.

If you do it carefully like the above, I think you will get along very well with your teachers.

 

10.   Try to be a Friend with

Who also Need to Understand----Your Teacher!

The teacher is a person, as everyone knows.  Every one needs respects and everyone must think so.  But, do you respect your teacher?  Some students always said that their teacher can’t understand their mind and friends must understand each other.  So they can’t regard their teacher as their friends.  However, do you understand your teacher’s mind?  In fact, all the students in the teacher’s eyes are the same. When the teacher criticizes some students, they often say that they hate the teacher.  At that time, why don’t you try to think it over in your teacher’s position?  If your teacher is wrong, after class, you’d better go to the teacher’s office and tell him or her about that sincerely.  But you should not talk back to him in the classroom.

In fact, some teachers do not really do well, but the proverb “To man is to err” is known by everybody.  We need to get in touch with them as quickly as possible.  Then tell them that they didn’t do very well and you hope that they can correct it in the future.  Deal with the trouble like this, you can understand your teacher better and then easier to be a friend to him or her.

If your teacher is free, you’d better tell him or her about your mind.  Perhaps he or she will tell you something to release your worries or sorrow.  When you have something you don’t know how to do, go to ask your teacher for help.  Then your teacher can get to know your mind.  At this time, your teacher is a friend to you because friends understand each other ; At this time, your teacher respects you and you trust your teacher because friends respect and trust each other ;  At this time, you can also ask about your teacher’s worries and try your best to help him because friends can help each other.

Every student should pay attention to this:  Try to open your mind to the teacher who you love.  Then you can understand each other.  And probably you can be the best friend to your teacher!  Do you agree with me?  My fellow students, have a try at this, OK?

 

11.  How to get on well with your teacher?

    When we were born, our parents were our first teachers.  Some years later, we stepped into the school gate, so we had some teachers to teach and help us.   As a student, we often face our teachers. But students are different the attitudes to their teachers are also different.  Some students love their teachers.  Some students disgust their teachers.  Still some students hate their teachers.  Take our English teacher Mr. Shi, for example. He is about more than forty years old.  When he has his turn to teach us, most of us will say, “Mr. Shi is coming to us.  Let's get ready for his lesson.  We will have a happy time again."  Some fellow students may say, "It's him again.  I don't really like him."  And…  Do you know why?  Because Mr. Shi is an excellent and very famous teacher of English in our county.  He gives his lessons so lively and interesting that he has been being praised by almost all of his students and their parents.  They speak highly to him.  The students love him and like to attend his class to take part in every activity.  They like to do whatever Mr. Shi asks them to do. But some "bad students" hate studying and often complain that they have to do a lot of homework.  They don't want to do their homework at all.  So you see the school interpersonal relationship in our area is just like that.

    But  I  don't like that kind of school interpersonal relationship.  I want all of students to love the teachers because they must be respected by us students.  They are our elders and also our good friends.  If there is really some misunderstanding between teachers and us, most of which is our wrongs or maybe it is really our teachers' fault.  If it is our wrongs, we must say "sorry" to our teachers.  But if it is our teachers' fault, we should point out their fault politely in a suitable occasion, but we should remember that we couldn't laugh at them.

    China has a saying, "Teachers are hardworking gardeners."  It is true. They are our youth's examples and leaders.  But "To man is to err."  We should soberly treat our teachers' mistakes.  We should know more about our teachers.  We can care for and support our teachers' work.  We ourselves should study hard and make efforts to have a good result.  Love our teachers, respect our teachers, our future will be brighter!

Dear Tom,

     It is great to receive your email and thank you for your giving me the beautiful card.  I'm happy to see it and I like it very much. 

    Tell you a piece of good news:  Yesterday there was a graduation ceremony for us Grade Three students.  The headmaster delivered a message to congratulate us on our graduation.  He hoped that we must continue to study hard after we entered the senior school.  And he wished us to have a pleasant and safe journey home. 

    All of us graduators had a thankful heart each on that day.  One of the boys made a speech to stand for us expressing grateful words to our dear teachers and our parents for their careful training and painful education. 

     Then the school leaders distributed the graduation certificates to us, as I had been longing to getting for quite a long time.  Though I liked my certificate, I felt more reluctant to leave my mother school than any other time before.  I had to go, even more beautiful future is waiting for me to start.

   The little artists performed their wonderful programmes.  Two boys showed us an exciting comic dialogue.  Many boys and girls sang and danced with the beautiful piano music played by a boy fellow student.  This unforgettable ceremony concluded with cheerful and light-hearted atmosphere.

    Are you happy that I have graduated from junior school?  I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

14.     Food·Drink·Health

    Good evening, everyone!  I am very glad to be here to give the talk on “Food·Drink·Health”.  It is the 21^st century now.  People’s lives are getting better and better.  They not only eat fully but also want to eat and drink something better and healthier than they or their parents did in the past.  Now I will tell you some kinds of healthy foods and drinks.  The foods like meat, fish, noodles, rice, fruit and vegetables are healthy.  The drinks like milk, water, juice, tea are also healthy ones.  But you must be careful because there are many unhealthy foods and drinks, like junk food including hamburgers, coffee, coke, candies, ice cream, etc.

    Only knowing the above is not enough to keep your body healthy.  You must have a good eating habit.  It means that you must regularly have three meals a day and you need to enjoy a variety of foods, though you don’t like that.  You’d better do personal exercise in the morning. The last but important one is washing your hands first before eating each meal.  And everyone should remember this----don’t smoke any more, or you will be ill.

    In a word, if you want to be in good health, you must eat healthily and do enough exercise.  That’s all.  Thank you for listening.

15.     Food · Drink · Health

    Good evening, everyone!  I am very glad to be here to give a talk on “Food·Drink·Health”.  Most of us students like eating junk food, like hamburgers.  Although they are delicious, they are harmful to our health.  We all like eating candies, but if we always eat those things, we will have a toothache.  All the students like eating ice creams, but ice creams are unhealthy.  When workers make them, we don’t know whether the materials are clean or not.  All the people like drinking coke and coffee, but if we drink those too much, we’ll be not healthy.  So we shouldn’t eat too much unhealthy food or drink.

    We must eat much healthy food and drink, like meat, fish, noodles, rice, vegetables, milk, water, juice, tea, etc.  They are all good food and drinks, so they are good for our health.  We can also eat some fruits, like apples, peaches, mangoes and so on so forth.  They are all nutritious foods.

    We should get into the habit of eating three meals a day, or we’ll have not enough nutrition.  And we should eat all kinds of foods.  We should get into the habits of washing hands before each meal.  And no smoking should also be considered.  I hear that a man smoked himself sick.  And his family worried about him.  Then his family asked him to give up smoking.  He did so and he got well again.  So we young generations who still have a long way to go must not smoke.

    We can also do some proper exercise to keep our body healthy.  Walking is good exercise, so we can go for a walk after dinner.  And do morning exercises every day.  That’s the end of my speech.  Thank you all.
