Haute 意为顶级，Couture 指女装缝制、刺绣等手工艺，Haute Couture 则译为：高级定制服。在时装界，Haute Couture 意味着奢华的制高点，拥有高不可攀的特权。 一般是指以皇室贵族和上流社会妇女为顾客，由高级时装设计师主持的工作室(ateliers)为顾客个别量身，用手工定做的独创性时装作品， 而且设计师(couturier)及其时装店(maison)必须经过法国巴黎时装协会的会员资格认证，一经法国巴黎时装协会的认定，设计师才享有 “高级时装设计师”的头衔，其时装作品才能使用“高级时装”的称号，并且受到法律的保护。
