Often people ask why you want to serve national service, while you have a chance to skip.  I said, luckily I did.  I have learnt to be better discipled, patient, respectful to others.

I truly hope I pass on my skill, experience and knowledge to the new generation.  Create more hopes to others....

Armour Emblem
When the Singapore Armed Forces was established in Aug 1965, it was decided that the SAF, like most other modern Armed Forces, must possess a modern and effective armoured capability. In Nov 1968, the first Armour unit known as 41 SAR was formed at Keat Hong Camp. The unit, led by MAJ Seah Peng Yong, was also known as the 'Commando Vehicle Unit' which operated on the V-200 vehicles.

1969

In 1969, the first armoured tank unit known as 40 SAB was formed. On 9 Aug that same year, the republic was enthralled as 18 AMX-13 tanks rumbled down St Andrew's Road, for the very first time in the nation's history, to salute the President at the National Day Parade.

In Oct 1969, the 41st Singapore Armoured Battalion (41 SAB) came into existence as there was a need to complement the tanks with armoured infantry. The unit originally operated on V-200 Armoured Personnel Carriers, which were then replaced by the more versatile M113 APC in 1976.

1970 - 1973

In Jul 1970, HQ 4 SAB was formed and 40 SAB and 41 SAB were renamed as 40 SAR and 41 SAR respectively. After the formation of HQ 4 SAB, the Armoured Infantry upgraded from the V-200 to the versatile M113 APC in 1973.

Since then, the SAF Armour continued to grow with the formations of 42nd Singapore Armoured Regiment (42 SAR), 46 SAR, School of Armour, HQ 8 SAB (Reserve) and Reserve Armour Training Centre (now known as Armour Training Centre).

Armour Soldiers
1979 - 1991

1979 also saw the inauguration of HQ Armour to bring all active and NS Armour units under a single professional command. As part of the reorganisation of the Army into Combined Arms Divisions, HQ 8 SAB was converted into an active Brigade in 1990 under the Command of HQ 3 Division. 1991 also saw the formations of two more NS Brigade HQs, HQ 54 SAB & HQ 56 SAB, under the Command of HQ 6 Division and HQ 9 Division respectively.

Throughout the years, the SAF Armour has also constantly upgraded her vehicles to meet the technological needs of the modern armies. Today, we have the upgraded SM1 tanks which have had their engines converted to run on diesel, and their track and suspension systems upgraded. They are able to drive up to a maximum speed of 60 km/h with a cruising range of about 450 to 500 km. The M113 APCs have also been upgraded (also known as ULTRA) with a more powerful engine, capable of allowing the vehicles to move at a maximum speed of 64 km/h.

1999

The vehicles are equipped with weapons systems such as the CIS 40/50 Twin Weapon Station and the 25mm M242 Bushmaster. Next in line are the service support tracked vehicles known as the BV 206 which have amphibious capability as well and are crucial in sustaining the effectiveness of SAF Armour in battles. The latest addition to the family of armoured vehicles is the indigenous Infantry Fighting Vehicles known as the BIONIX. It is a power-packed masterpiece that is locally designed and produced, with a maximum speed of 75 km/h and a cruising range of 450 km. The first BIONIX operational battalion was recently commissioned by DPM, DR Tony Tan, on 31 Jul 1999.

Through the years, members of the Armour formation are well-known for their esprit de corps. This is result of a closely knitted organisation practising a people-oriented leadership style. Armour officers and specialists are also noted for their professionalism and notably, the black beret. The history of the black beret as a symbol of Armour dates back to 1917 when it was first used by the French tankmen of World War I, not as a military insignia, but more a matter of personal taste. Eventually, the black beret was adopted as the official French tankmen's head-dress in Aug 1919. The black beret was also chosen independently as the official head dress by the British and German armoured forces. This proves its symbolic significance as the unique headdress of any armour formation.

The SAF Armour stands competent and ready to play its part in defending the country's independence and sovereignty.
