Passage24
BAAAB
Human are the dominant species on the planet Earth. Their numbers
are increasing rapidly. They are no longer restricted by their
environment, as they can live in the most hostile of deserts or the
bitter cold of Antarctica.
Human culture is heavily based on the earth’s natural
resources---oil, coal and metals; soil water and forest.
Industrialized society is using increasing amount of these
resources each year. Governments and industrialists strive for
economic growth for factories and mines to produce more each year
than they did in the previous year. But fuels and metals and, to a
lesser extent, the soils are nonrenewable resources. Once used,
they are gone for ever. In many cases the lifetime of these
resources is coming to an end.
Factories
and machines create wastes. These wastes are poured into the
atmosphere, the water and even into soil. The damaging effect of
this pollution is, in some cases, permanent.
To reduce pollution creates future problems. Factories may have
to be redesigned or even pulled down. This costs money and may mean
loss of livelihood for many workers.
Modern technology is creating an additional problem and it is
making industry more and more automatic. This means that fewer and
fewer people are needed to operate factories and offices. The
consequence loss of jobs is a worldwide problem and Western society
is still struggling to find the answers.

Passage25
BDCBB
“Pop” is short for popular,
and popular, in its true sense, means “ of or for the people”.
The Pop Revolution of the 1960s changed the pattern of English
life. It gave the young an importance and influence they had never
had before. Just how far-reaching that influence is can be judged
from a look at advertisements. The young are now regarded as one of
the most important markets for consumer goods.
The Pop
Revolution has broken down social barriers among the young. It has
also helped to sweep away many of the inhibitions which gave the
British their reputation for being cold and reserved. It was in the
1960s that people in British began to talk about the “ permissive
society” and the “generation gap”.
“The teenager girls who
screamed hysterically over the Beetles,” said a journalist one day
“and the teenagers boys who copied the Beetles and grew their hair
long and were no longer ashamed of wearing pretty clothes, were
simply breaking through traditional British reserve and fear of
showing their feelings. I;\’m sure one of the main reasons why boys
and girls are such good companions today is because they’re no
longer afraid of showing their feeling towards one another. A lot
of older people who criticize them are probably just jealous
because they couldn’t or didn’t behave in the same way when they
were young!”

Passage25
BCDAD
Washington Irving was America’s first man of letters to be known
internationally. His works were received t=enthusiastically both in
England and in the United States. He was, in fact, one of the most
successful writers of his time in either country, delighting a
large general public and at the same time winning the admiration of
follow writers like Scott in Britain and Poe and Hawthorne in the
United States. The respect in which he was held was partly owing to
the man himself , with his warm friendliness, his good sense, his
urbanity, his gay spirits, his artistic integrity, his love of both
the Old World and the New. Thackeray described Irving as “
gentleman, who, though himself born in no very high sphere, was
most finished, polished, witty; socially the equal of the most
refined Europeans”. In England he was granted an honorary degree
from Oxford --- an unusual honor for a citizen of a young,
uncultured nation --- and he received the medal of the royal
Society of Literature; America made him ambassador to Spain.
Irving’s
background provides little to explain hid literary achievements. A
gifted but delicate child, he had little schooling. He studied law,
but without zeal, and never did practice seriously. He was immune
to his strict Presbyterian home environment, frequenting both
gatherings and the theater.
