Kentucky’s Churchill Downs is home to “the most exciting two minutes in sports.”
The "most exciting two minutes in sports” happen in Kentucky. At Louisville’s Churchill Downs, the world's fastest thoroughbred horses have competed on the first Saturday of every May since 1875. Known as the Kentucky Derby, this race is the oldest continuously held sporting event in the United States and one of the most prestigious in the world.
Finding ways to stretch those two minutes, Louisville now hosts the Kentucky Derby Festival. The monthlong event features 70 activities ranging from one of the largest half-marathons in the United States to the largest annual fireworks show in North America, with balloon rides and steamboat races to boot.
On race day, many people attend Derby parties. Men wear tailored suits while women wear dresses and elaborate hats. Many adults sip mint juleps — a mixture of Kentucky bourbon, mint and simple syrup — and most everyone enjoys a slice of Derby Pie, a pie made with chocolate and walnuts.
