U.S. responds to Nepal’s need

Ten days after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Nepal, international agencies providing relief to the mountainous country know much more help is needed.

That’s why the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) on May 5 announced an additional $11 million to assist in Nepal earthquake relief efforts.

“After visiting Kathmandu and a province to the north, I’ve seen firsthand the destruction caused by this earthquake,” said USAID Acting Administrator Alfonso Lenhardt. “We stand with you as you recover from this crisis.”

The announcement brings total U.S. commitment to Nepal earthquake relief to nearly $26 million.

The new funds will provide more emergency shelter materials, medical supplies, safe drinking water, improved sanitation and hygiene kits to the people who need it most.

Latest estimates indicate the April 25 earthquake killed more than 7,500 people, injured more than 14,500 and affected 8 million around the country.

As part of the U.S. response, search and rescue teams from Fairfax County, Virginia, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department continue to work side by side with Nepalese.

U.S. military personnel also remain in the country, helping with emergency relief efforts. Five U.S. military aircraft arrived in Nepal May 3 to deliver supplies — including USAID relief material — to areas made inaccessible by landslides.

Their efforts are supported by the U.S. space agency. NASA is providing satellite maps that show earthquake-damaged areas of Nepal. The maps are being used to better direct relief efforts.

You too can help Nepal. Visit this USAID webpage for a list of organizations providing earthquake relief. Learn more about efforts to help Nepal at the U.S. Embassy Kathmandu Facebook page.
