华盛顿纪念碑重新向游人开放

5月12日,一位拿着华盛顿纪念碑(Washington Monument)模型的美国政府工作人员(左)来参加在美国首都举行的庆祝华盛顿纪念碑经过近3年的修缮之后重新开放的仪式。
这座有130年历史的方尖石碑自从在2011年8月的一次地震中产生裂痕和剥落后一直对外关闭。
在这座标志性的纪念碑重新开放以后,来自世界各地的游客将能再次登上这座169.29米高的纪念碑,欣赏美国首都及其周边地区的独特景色。
5月9日,在庆祝美国的全国旅行和旅游周(National Travel and Tourism Week)的一次活动上,美国商务部(U.S. Commerce Department)官员肯·海厄特(Ken Hyatt)指出:“全世界的旅游者继续将美国选作他们的旅游目的地。”
他说:“我们继续为实现欧巴马总统提出的每年吸引1亿名访客的目标取得良好的进展。”

The 130-year-old stone obelisk had been closed to the public since it was cracked and chipped by an earthquake in August 2011.
With the reopening of the iconic monument, visitors from around the world will once again be able to experience a unique view of the U.S. capital city and surrounding areas from its 169.29-meter height.
Celebrating National Travel and Tourism Week in the United States May 9, U.S. Commerce Department official Ken Hyatt noted that “tourists around the world continue to select the United States as their travel destination.”
“We continue to make good progress toward achieving President Obama’s goal of attracting 100 million visitors annually,” he said.
