世界上最古老的河流之一与世界上最长的桥梁之一，在每年中的一天成为万人瞩目焦点。
西弗吉尼亚州的新河峡（New River Gorge）着实拥有不少可以夸耀的资本。从地质上而言，新河(New River)被称作世界第三大古老河流。事实上，由于新河的形成年代早于周围山脉，因而它的流向是从南向北——不同于多数河流。
新河峡大桥（New River Gorge Bridge）也毫不逊色，它是美国最长，也是世界第三长的钢架拱桥。桥长924米，拱跨518米。古河加大桥，得出什么结果？——世界规模最大的极限运动盛会：大桥跳伞节（Bridge Day）。
大桥跳伞节每年10月第3个星期六在西弗吉尼亚州的费耶特维尔（Fayetteville）举行。每年这一天，大桥上禁止车辆通行，完全对行人开放。成千上万人慕名而来。2012年官方预测，会有8万人前来欣赏数百名跳伞运动员和极限跳伞运动员从267米高处跳入河中。

How one of the world’s oldest rivers and one of the world’s longest bridges combine powers for a day.
West Virginia’s New River Gorge has a lot of bragging rights. Geologically, the New River has been called the third-oldest river in the world. In fact, because the New River was formed before the mountains, it flows south to north — unlike most other rivers.
Not to be outdone, the New River Gorge Bridge is the longest steel arch bridge in the United States and the third-longest in the world. The bridge is 924 meters in length and its arch spans 518 meters. So what do you get when you combine an old river with a big bridge? The largest extreme sports event in the world: Bridge Day.
On the third Saturday of every October, Fayetteville, West Virginia, hosts Bridge Day. It is the one day of the year when officials close the bridge to traffic and open it to pedestrians. Thousands take advantage of the opportunity. In 2012, officials expect 80,000 spectators on the bridge to watch as hundreds of parachutists and base jumpers descend the 267 meters to the river below.
