Utah’s Fossilized Jurassic Park

Utah’s Dinosaur National Monument features a plethora of natural wonders, including an extensive collection of dinosaur fossils.
Designated a U.S. national monument by President Woodrow Wilson in 1915, Dinosaur National Monument encompasses 800 square kilometers of mountains, deserts, ancient rivers and deep canyons across Utah and Colorado — not to mention thousands of dinosaur bones.
To awaken your inner paleontologist, stop by the monument’s Quarry Exhibit. Here you can see some 1,500 dinosaur bones embedded into the rock wall, including the remains of an Allosaurus, Camarasaurus and Stegosaurus. Visitors are even allowed to touch some of the fossils, which can be up to 149 million years old.
If you’d like a little more adventure, try rafting along one of the rivers that deposited the fossils into the quarry. Both the Green and Yampa rivers are open to visitors. Hiking is another way to combine adventure with discovery. The monument offers six trails on the Utah side, including the Fossil Discovery Trail, which enables hikers to find fossils in the wild just as paleontologists did years ago.
