Agency Seeks Public Input on New Marine Sanctuaries
A U.S. government agency is seeking public input on a proposed process to pick new national marine sanctuaries.
The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is seeking public input on a proposed process to pick new national marine sanctuaries.
“Our goal is to establish a process communities can use to recommend areas of the marine environment that could benefit from designation as a sanctuary, and we’re asking the public to tell us what they think that criteria should be,” Holly A. Bamford, an assistant NOAA administrator for the National Ocean Service, said in a July 28 NOAA press release.

The current network of 14 protected areas includes more than 440,000 square kilometers of marine and Great Lakes waters from Washington state to the Florida Keys and from Lake Huron to American Samoa. The network includes 13 national marine sanctuaries and the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. Sanctuaries are used to protect natural and cultural features while allowing people to use and enjoy the ocean in a sustainable way.
