Professional sports teams and athletes in the United States give back to their communities.
Carolina Panthers Quarterback Cam Newton prays before a goal post covered in pink for the National Football League’s breast cancer awareness campaign, “A Crucial Catch.”
Conducted in partnership with the American Cancer Society (ACS), the NFL’s campaign focuses on the importance of annual diagnostic screening. By marketing a plethora of pink-hued paraphernalia and auctioning apparel worn by players and coaches, the organization raises awareness and money for the cause. The proceeds benefit ACS’s Community Health Advocates National Grants for Empowerment (CHANGE) program, which provides breast cancer screenings to women in underserved communities.
But the NFL is not the only national sports league dedicated to community service. The National Basketball Association’s NBA Cares program, which focuses on education, family development and health and wellness, has raised more than $218 million for charity since 2005.
All 30 teams in Major League Baseball recognize May as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Awareness Month in honor of baseball great Lou Gehrig, who suffered from ALS. Major League Baseball Charities and the MLB Players Trust sponsor many community activities.
