White House Honors 11 Immigrant Innovators

Washington — The White House has named 11 American inventors and entrepreneurs as Immigrant Innovator Champions of Change.

“Immigrants have long made America more prosperous and innovative,” U.S. Chief Technology Officer Todd Park said in announcing the honors May 29. “We are proud to recognize these leaders who work every day to grow our economy, advance science and technology, and support their home communities.”

More than 40 percent of the 500 biggest U.S. companies were founded by immigrants or children of immigrants. In 2011, immigrants started 28 percent of all new businesses in the United States, according to the White House.

“The champions we are celebrating today represent the very best in leadership, entrepreneurship and public service,” Park said.

These are the Immigrant Innovator Champions of Change:

India native Shradha Agarwal earned a degree in journalism at Northwestern University in Illinois. She then founded ContextMedia, a health care media company, and positioned it as a “for-benefit” venture — a profitable enterprise with clear social benefits. The company’s growth has doubled annually. Agarwal splits her time between New York and Chicago, where in 2012 she was inducted into the the city’s 40 Under 40 list of young achievers.

In 2008 Riddhiman Das came to the United States from India to study computer science, mathematics and entrepreneurship at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. While still an undergraduate, he co-founded Dr. Peet's Software LLC; TalentHelix; and Galleon Labs LLC. He also helped develop technology used in EyeVerify LLC, a Kansas City startup that uses mobile biometric technology to authenticate identity and is a safe alternative to entering passwords on smartphones. Das went on to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Missouri and remains engaged with the businesses.

Ashifi Gogo of Ghana is the chief executive officer of Sproxil, a social enterprise that markets Mobile Product Authentication, a technology used to combat the multibillion-dollar fake drug market. Users can use the technology to verify the authenticity of their medication. Sproxil is used in many industries worldwide, including automotive goods. Gogo holds a doctorate in electrical engineering from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics from Whitman College in Washington state. He resides in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Originally from Costa Rica, John Herrera co-founded the Latino Community Credit Union in Holly Springs, North Carolina. The venture is the first fully bilingual financial institution in the state, one of the fastest growing community development credit unions in the nation and a banking model for new immigrants. Herrera also is believed to be the first Hispanic immigrant to be elected to municipal government in North Carolina.

Poland-born Olga Koper works in an innovation group at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio. She holds more than 30 patents involving the use of small-scale materials. The first chief technology officer of Kansas State University spinoff NanoScale Corporation in 2007, Koper was selected as Pipeline Inc.’s 2013 Innovator of the Year and Entrepreneur magazine chose her as an “Entrepreneurial Woman to Watch.” Koper received a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Silesia in Poland and a doctorate from Kansas State University. She resides in Dublin, Ohio.

Jonas Korlach of Newark, California, is chief scientific officer at Pacific Biosciences. While a graduate student at Cornell University in New York, Korlach co-invented the company’s SMRT technology that dramatically improves the accuracy and speed of DNA sequencing. The holder of 33 patents, Korlach has authored numerous scientific articles about the technology. He received his master’s and doctorate degrees in biochemistry, molecular and cell biology from Cornell, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in biological sciences from Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany.

Russia native Anna Mongayt co-founded Upstart, a crowdfunding platform that lets young people raise money in exchange for a portion of their future income. Upstart enables users to alleviate financial burdens like student loans by predicting their future earning potential and matching them with backers who believe in their career goals.

A native of New Zealand, Wildfire founder Victoria Ransom of Menlo Park, California, led the company to profitability in just one year and built it to tens of thousands of customers and eight offices worldwide. (Wildfire was later acquired by Google.) Fortune magazine in 2012 named her one of its "Most Powerful Women Entrepreneurs."

Zack Rinat of Redwood Shores, California, founded the revenue management company Model N in 1999. Before that, he co-founded NetDynamics Inc., an application server company (later acquired by Sun Microsystems Inc.), and served on the boards of e-commerce sites TradingDynamics Inc. and Conduit Ltd. He has held senior management positions in operations, marketing and engineering at Silicon Graphics Inc. and Advanced Technology Israel. Rinat holds a master’s in business from Harvard and a bachelor’s in computer science from the Technion (Israel Institute of Technology).

Amar Sawhney is an inventor and entrepreneur with more than 120 patents for medical devices that have helped millions of patients worldwide. His six companies have earned more than $1.5 billion in revenue. Sawhney, who lives in Bedford, Massachusetts, also mentors young innovators. He was born in India.

Sri Lanka–born Sivalingam Sivananthan, a physicist and entrepreneur, is director of the microphysics laboratory at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the founder of Sivananthan Laboratories Inc. in Bolingbrook, Illinois, and created advanced military infrared night vision technology, a platform for next-generation solar cells. He also helped found the nonprofit Institute for Solar Photovoltaic Innovation, Research, and Edu-training, or InSPIRE, to prepare the Illinois workforce and interested students to build a renewable energy and solar ecosystem for the state.
