巴尔的摩大教堂是在美国建造的第一座天主教大教堂，成为宗教自由的象征。
圣母升天国家朝圣地圣殿（Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary）于1821年落成，是在美国建造的第一座天主教大教堂。大教堂新古典主义的外形设计和明光烁亮的内部不仅脱离了当时宗教建筑的窠臼，也表现了对宗教思维的标新立异。
巴尔的摩大教堂由 “美国建筑之父”本杰明·亨利·拉特罗布（Benjamin Henry Latrobe）设计，以圆柱型希腊门廊和木制圆顶为主要特征。大教堂建成之时，无论在面积、规模还是精致程度上都是除美国国会山以外最宏伟的建筑物，至今依然继续大力倡导公开祈祷的自由。
教皇保罗二世（Pope John Paul II）、特蕾莎修女（Mother Teresa）和君士坦丁堡普世牧首巴爾多祿茂一世（Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople） 均访问过巴尔的摩大教堂。1971年，巴尔的摩大教堂被列为国家历史名胜（National Historic Landmark）。

Baltimore's Basilica represents the first Roman Catholic cathedral in the United States. It also stands as a testament to religious freedom.
Completed in 1821, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was the first Catholic cathedral built in the United States. Its neo-classical exterior and illuminated interior represented a departure not only from the religious architecture of the time but also from the religious thinking.
Designed by the “Father of American Architecture,” Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the basilica features a Greek portico with columns and a wooden dome. With the exception of the U.S. Capitol, the basilica was the most prominent building in size, scale and sophistication at the time of its construction. It continues to celebrate the freedom to worship openly.
Pope John Paul II, Mother Teresa and the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople have all visited the basilica, which received National Historic Landmark status in 1971.
