(Jefferson City)

大众文化:马克·吐温的《汤姆·索耶历险记》(The Adventures of Tom Sawyer)和《哈克贝利·芬历险记》(Adventures of Huckleberry Finn)都以密苏里州虚构的城镇为背景。2009年的喜剧片《在云端》(Up in the Air)在圣路易斯城一带拍摄,主演有乔治·克鲁尼(George Clooney)、薇拉·法米迦 (Vera Farmiga)以及安娜·肯德里克 (Anna Kendrick)。

The Gateway to the West, Missouri takes pride in a culture influenced by Eastern, Western and Southern states.
Missouri’s seat at the frontier of U.S. western expansion earned it the moniker “Gateway to the West.” It also infused it with Eastern, Western and Southern influences. Chow down on Kansas City barbecue, soak up the St. Louis blues or chill out on the Lake of the Ozarks.

Capital: Jefferson City
Population: 6,010,688
Geography: Missouri ties with Tennessee for having more neighbor states than any other state with Iowa to its north, Illinois and Kentucky to the east, Tennessee and Arkansas to the south, and Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska to the west.
Higher Education: The University of Missouri, or Mizzou, is a public research university and the largest university in the state. Mizzou is one of six public universities to maintain a law school, medical school and veterinary medicine school on the same campus, and it is known for its journalism program. Founded in 1818, St. Louis University is the oldest university west of the Mississippi. This private school offers nearly 100 undergraduate programs and more than 50 graduate programs. The Show Me State’s most prestigious school is Washington University, or Wash U. Located in St. Louis, this private research university boasts 19 graduate and professional programs ranked in the top 10 in the country. Founded in 1853, the school is best known for its medicine, therapy, social work and business schools.
Major Industries: Agriculture, manufacturing, mining and service are all major industries in Missouri. The state’s major agriculture products include soybeans, cattle, corn, hogs and dairy. Transportation equipment leads its manufacturing sector with outputs such as airplanes, barges, trains and trucks. Food processing, particularly beer, is another important element to Missouri’s manufacturing sector. Major mining products include lead, limestone and coal. Health care services round out the Show Me State’s industries.
Sports Teams: Missouri is a state divided when it comes to sports. There are the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs and Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals on one side, and the National Football League’s St. Louis Rams and Major League Baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals on the other. If there’s one thing all Missourians can agree on, it’s to cheer for the state’s only National Hockey League team, the St. Louis Blues.
Famous Missourians include actors Cedric the Entertainer, Don Cheadle, John Goodman, Ginger Rogers and Dick Van Dyke; entertainers Josephine Baker, Chuck Berry and Sheryl Crow; writers Maya Angelou, T.S. Eliot, Langston Hughes and Mark Twain; journalist Walter Cronkite; baseball great Yogi Berra; fashion designer Kate Spade; scientists George Washington Carver and Edwin P. Hubble; Twitter founder Jack Dorsey; outlaw Jesse James; the first female governor in the United States, Nellie Ross; U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu; and U.S. President Harry S. Truman.
Pop Culture: Both Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn are set in fictional towns in Missouri. The 2009 comedy-drama Up in the Air, starring George Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick, was filmed in and around St. Louis, Missouri.
Culinary Specialties: Given its location within the United States, Missouri has both Southern and Midwestern influences that extend to its cuisine. Kansas City is best known for its own style of barbecue — dry rubbed with spices, smoked over hickory for hours and slathered in a semi-spicy, tomato-based sauce with hints of vinegar and molasses. Further south, there’s Ozark pudding, a sort of cake made with chopped apples, pecans, vanilla, eggs and brown sugar. This sweet treat was U.S. President Truman’s favorite dessert. Over in St. Louis, locals enjoy gooey butter cake, a rich yeast cake topped with butter, sugar and vanilla to create a spun-sugar taste while it bakes.
International Connection: Missouri’s capital, Jefferson City, is a sister city with Münchberg, Germany.
Fun Facts:
• People in St. Louis consume more barbecue sauce per capita than any other city in the United States.
• Kansas City, Missouri, claims to have more boulevards than any other city but Paris and more fountains than any other city but Rome.
• By production volume, the Anheuser-Busch brewery in St. Louis is the largest brewery in the United States.
Adventure Idea: Follow the footsteps of explorers Lewis and Clark along the Missouri River on the Katy Trail. This 386-kilometer rails-to-trails path weaves through small-town America, peaceful farmland and the river’s edge.
