有关密西西比州的详情见探索美国网站( DiscoverAmerica.com)。

(Jackson)

(Agricultural and Mechanical College of the State of Mississippi),现在是昵称木兰之州(Magnolia State)的一流院校,可颁发博士学位,设有70多种专业。

Capital: Jackson

Population: Nearly 3 million people live in Mississippi.

Geography: Considered part of the United States' Deep South, Mississippi shares a border with Tennessee to the north, Alabama to the east, and Louisiana and Arkansas to the west. The Gulf of Mexico lies to the south.

Higher Education: Chartered in 1884, the Mississippi University for Women was the first state-supported college for women in the United States. Today, the college ranks among the South’s best public institutions and offers more than 50 majors and concentrations. Affectionately known as Ole Miss, the University of Mississippi is another public university located in Oxford. Founded in 1844, Ole Miss is a doctoral degree–granting university with more than 100 programs of study. Established as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of the State of Mississippi in 1862, Mississippi State University is a premier institution of higher learning in the Magnolia State. The doctoral–degree granting university offers more than 70 majors.

Major Industries: With a rich history in cotton production, Mississippi retains its roots as an agrarian economy. The Magnolia State’s top agricultural products are cotton, poultry, catfish, cattle, soybeans and dairy. Its major industrial products include meatpacking and food processing as well as furniture, particularly upholstered products.

Famous Mississippians: The Muppets creator Jim Henson, actor James Earl Jones, talk-show host Oprah Winfrey and journalist Robin Roberts were all born in Mississippi. The Magnolia State is also big on creativity and innovation, with natives that include Black Entertainment Television (BET) founder Robert L. Johnson, Music Television (MTV) founder Robert Pittman, reality television creator Jonathan Murray and FedEx founder Fred Smith. Musicians Jimmy Buffett, Sam Cooke, Bo Diddley, Faith Hill, Elvis Presley, Conway Twitty and Ike Turner were born in Mississippi along with award-winning authors William Faulkner, Richard Ford and Natasha Trethewey.

Pop Culture: Ole Miss was the school of choice in the 2009 biographical drama The Blind Side starring Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw. The 1958 classic drama Cat on a Hot Tin Roof starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman was set in Mississippi. The Coen Brothers’ O Brother, Where Art Thou with George Clooney took place in rural Mississippi during the Great Depression, and the 2011 comedy The Help starring Emma Stone was set in Mississippi during the Civil Rights era.

Culinary Specialties: Like its neighbor to the west, Mississippi has a culinary tradition with both southern and Creole influences. From fried catfish and hush puppies to fried green tomatoes and crawfish, Mississippi’s cuisine mirrors that of Louisiana with one notable exception: Mississippi Mud Pie. Named after its resemblance to the muddy shores of the Mississippi River, this decadent dessert features creamy chocolate pudding atop dense chocolate cake and a crumbly cookie crust.

International connection: Madison, Mississippi, is sister cities with Sollefteå, Sweden. Oxford, Mississippi, is sister cities with Aubigny-sur-Nère, France.

Fun facts:

•The University of Mississippi Medical Center performed the world’s first human lung transplant in 1963.

• The most rare North American crane lives in the savannahs of Jackson Country, Mississippi. The Mississippi Sandhill Crane has a wingspan of more than 2 meters.

• In terms of volume, the Mississippi River is the largest river in the United States. (The Missouri River is the longest.)

Adventure idea: Follow the 715-kilometer buffalo trail established by the Natchez, Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes and early explorers hundreds of years ago. The scenic Natchez Trace Trail winds from the banks of the Mississippi all the way to Nashville, Tennessee.
