美国等国正在联合发起将远洋白鳍鲨列为《濒危野生动植物种国际贸易公约》(Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora,CITES)的保护对象的提案。

(US Fish and Wildlife Service)介绍,远洋白鳍鲨栖息在全球各地的温暖水域。

Colombia, Brazil and the United States are co-sponsoring a proposal to protect the oceanic whitetip shark under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The United States is co-sponsoring a proposal to protect the oceanic whitetip shark under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

CITES, which entered into force in 1975, is an international treaty that aims to ensure the survival of species traded across borders for commercial and other purposes. It protects nearly 35,000 animal and plant species.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the oceanic whitetip shark inhabits warm waters worldwide. Its fins command a high price and are used to make shark fin soup. It is also often caught accidentally by swordfish and tuna fisheries.

The proposal, submitted by Colombia and co-sponsored by the United States and Brazil, would list the species under Appendix II of the convention. Appendix II protects those species that are not currently endangered, but that may become endangered without trade controls.

The proposal will be considered at the convention’s regular meeting in Bangkok March 3–14.
