If you’ve read the best-selling novels Carrie, Insomnia and It, you may wonder why so many horrors happen in Maine. It’s because these books share an author in Mainer Stephen King.
Born in Portland, Maine, in 1947, King spent parts of his childhood in Indiana and Connecticut before landing back in the Pine Tree State. He attended the University of Maine at Orono, where he wrote for the school newspaper and earned a bachelor’s degree in English.
After college, King went on to teach and write in his spare time. He made his first professional short story sale in 1967 and published his first novel, Carrie, in 1974. Today, King has published more than 50 books and is considered one of the world’s most commercially successful writers. Critically, he has won more than 10 Bram Stoker Awards and received the National Book Foundation’s 2003 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.
In his spare time, King plays with the Rock Bottom Remainders, a band of authors that plays annual shows for charity. His other philanthropic activities, fittingly, involve education and libraries.
Owing to his New England roots, King is also an avid Boston Red Sox fan.
