副总统拜登在最高法院大法官索尼娅•索托马约尔的主持下宣誓就职，开始第二任期。
副总统乔·拜登（Joe Biden）于1月20日在华盛顿海军天文台（Naval Observatory）举行的正式典礼上宣誓就职后，手持拜登家族的圣经，与最高法院大法官索尼娅·索托马约尔（Sonia Sotomayor）握手。副总统夫人吉尔（Jill）站在中间，面带笑容。
大法官索托马约尔受拜登之邀主持其就职宣誓，她是主持副总统就职宣誓的第四位女性和第一位拉美后裔。
由于欧巴马政府的首届任期于1月20日中午结束，因此总统和副总统在星期日举行了非公开就职宣誓，然后安排在1月21日星期一举行公开就职典礼。根据美国的传统，当1月20日适逢星期日时，则将公开就职典礼——集会、游行、总统就职演说和就职舞会等活动——顺延到第二天。

Justice Sotomayor, invited by Biden to administer the oath, was the fourth woman and the first Hispanic to preside over a vice-presidential swearing-in.
Because the first term of the Obama administration ended at noon on January 20, both the president and the vice president took oaths of office on Sunday, in advance of the public ceremonies scheduled for Monday, January 21. It is a U.S. tradition that when January 20 falls on a Sunday, the public swearing-in — with the crowds, parade, the president's inaugural address and celebratory balls — deferred until the next day.
