Multitalented Athlete Takes Slopes at Winter Special Olympics
By Charlene Porter | Staff Writer | 18 January 2013
Steve Lynn was in Lake Placid, New York, in November 2012 for training camp with the rest of the U.S. Special Olympics team.
Washington — Almost 200 athletes, coaches and support staff from the United States are heading to the Republic of Korea to participate in the 10th Special Olympics World Winter Games January 29–February 5.
One true veteran of Special Olympics competition will be Steve Lynn, representing the state of Oklahoma. He’s been giving his all to sports for 24 years, while holding some energy in reserve to work as a cart attendant at a Target department store in his hometown of Oklahoma City.
Lynn, 39 years old, is going to the Winter Games as a competitor in the Alpine skiing events, but he also competes in team sports like soccer, floor hockey and basketball, winning recognition as a “Most Valuable Player [MVP]” at a few events. Steve won a spot to play at a tournament sponsored by the National Basketball Association a few years back. At that event, in the state of Florida, Lynn was recognized as the “Most Dedicated Athlete.”
“He loves to compete,” said Lynn’s mother, Joanne. “He takes the challenge presented by athletes from other teams and countries and works toward a performance to be his very best in the sport in which he is competing,” she said, in reflecting on his athletic career.
Lynn will be competing against 43 other Alpine skiers in the Republic of Korea. His Oklahoma teammate, Amy Wollmershauser, will compete in snowshoeing events.
Lynn faces some life challenges and skills beyond his reach, but sports is an activity where he has learned to push himself to become better. “He can improve his athletic abilities through practice,” Joanne Lynn said.
About 2,400 athletes from 110 countries come together for the Special Olympic Games in PyeongChang and Gangneung, at the same sites where the 2018 Winter Olympic Games will be held.
Athletes will compete in seven sports: alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, short-track speedskating, figure skating, floor hockey and the demonstration sport of floor ball.
Worldwide, more than 4 million athletes participate in Special Olympics, a movement creating an arena of competition for adults and children with intellectual disabilities while promoting equality, tolerance and acceptance everywhere.
