这正是居住在纽约长岛(Long Island, New York)的艾登•德威尔(Aidan Dwyer )所做的。

Trees Show the Way to Capture Solar Power

Learn how mimicking nature helped a budding scientist win the Young Naturalist Award.

If leaves are the solar panels of trees — collecting sunlight for the photosynthesis the tree needs to survive — why not mimic them for collecting solar energy for human use?

That’s what Aidan Dwyer of Long Island, New York, did.

He built a prototype “solar tree” and compared it against conventional flat-panel solar collectors and found his tree design made 50 percent more electricity.

Dwyer was just 13 when the tangled branches of trees in winter caught his attention. “I saw patterns that showed that the tree design avoided the problem of shade from other objects,” he writes in the paper that helped him win an award in 2011 in the Young Naturalist national science competition sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

Dwyer continues to tweak his design to more accurately measure electrical current and power. So far, he says, his tree design continues to outperform flat panels.

He has filed a provisional patent application to protect his research, which has attracted international attention, and which, he says, “could actually change the world.”
