(Office of Letters and Light)主持。

November Is National Novel Writing Month

National Novel Writing Month began in 1999 as a self-imposed challenge among friends to each write a 50,000-word novel in 30 days. Now an online writing project held annually in November, it attracts scores of aspiring authors who want to prove they've got what it takes to be a novelist.
F. Scott Fitzgerald took eight years to write his classic novel Tender Is the Night, but an online project known as National Novel Writing Month (or NaNoWriMo, for short) asks aspiring authors to write a 50,000-word novel during a span of 30 days, from November 1–30.
National Novel Writing Month was first held in 1999, when a San Francisco Bay Area freelance writer named Chris Baty challenged 20 friends to each write a novel in just one month. Six of them met that goal, and the writing project has been held annually ever since. Today, the Office of Letters and Light, a nonprofit organization based in Berkeley, California, oversees NaNoWriMo.
The project has grown exponentially from its modest beginnings, and last year 256,618 participants signed on, with 36,843 actually meeting the challenge. NaNoWriMo aims to encourage everyone, from seasoned novelists to amateurs, to write on a daily basis. The strict deadline is cited by many participants as a strong motivator to keep cranking out their daily word count.
While most participants never will attain the lofty status of best-selling authors such as Stephen King (seen here, greeting a fan while signing copies of his novel Under the Dome), they generally agree that completing a 50,000-word novel is a worthy objective.
The United States is the world’s most prolific book-publishing country, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. In 2010, more than 328,000 titles were published in the United States, a country with a literacy rate of nearly 100 percent.
