柱状岩地区遍布公元1100年左右普韦布罗（Pueblo）族人的几百个建筑遗迹，其中有一座供举行仪式用的大型建筑，很可能是每年观测夏至天象的观象台。柱状岩是北美最引人注目的自然古迹奇观之一。柱状岩由两座高2,316米的石柱组成，与北半球每18年出现一次的月静现象相映成趣，与夏至、秋分和蟹形星云的景象一起蔚为壮观。普韦布罗族人常常回到柱状岩拜谒祖先并举行各种祭神仪式。

President Obama September 21 established Chimney Rock as a national monument. Located in the San Juan National Forest in southwestern Colorado, the site offers a spectacular landscape rich in history and Native American culture.
Chimney Rock is home to hundreds of ruins built by the Pueblo people around A.D. 1100, including the ceremonial "great house” that likely was used as an observatory for the annual summer solstice. Chimney Rock is one of the best-recognized natural archeological wonders in North America. Its two 2,316-meter rock pinnacles align with the northern lunar standstill every 18 years, and with the summer solstice, equinoxes and Crab Nebula. Pueblo people return to Chimney Rock to visit their ancestors and for other spiritual purposes.
Chimney Rock offers opportunities to understand how geology, ecology and archeology interrelate. The 1,913-hectare Chimney Rock National Monument is managed by the U.S. Forest Service in collaboration with tribal, community, state and federal partners.
