The spectacular architecture and collections of Los Angeles' Getty Villa transport visitors back in time.
When visitors climb the marble steps to the Getty Villa, they are transported back to ancient Rome. Modeled after the Villa of the Papyri, which was preserved in ash after Mount Vesuvius’ eruption nearly two millennia ago, the Getty Villa houses an impressive collection of Greek, Roman and Etruscan art.
The museum’s other location, the Getty Center, contains a collection of Western art from medieval times to the present. The Getty Center’s lush gardens of local plants and flowers frame the building’s travertine exterior. Inside, such famous paintings as Van Gogh’s Irises and Monet’s Sunrise can be found.
An estimated 1.3 million people pass through the doors of the Getty Museum each year, making it one of the most visited museums in the United States.
