International Visitors Flocking to U.S.

The number of tourists visiting the United States is growing.
Blue-winged teal ducks take flight over the Big Salt Marsh at the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge near Sterling, Kansas. Tourists flock to the wildlife refuge each year to see the bird migration. And the number of tourists going there and everywhere in the United States is growing. International visitors spent an estimated $13.7 billion on travel to and tourism within the United States during July — $350 million (3 percent) more than in July 2011, the Commerce Department said September 19.
Are the numbers growing in part because of the U.S. National Travel and Tourism Strategy? Among the strategy’s efforts are improving visa processing and the greeting of foreign visitors when they arrive in the United States. A progress report on that effort released September 19 outlines advances made in both.
Year to date, international visitors have spent an estimated $95.4 billion on U.S. travel and tourism-related goods and services — an increase of more than 9 percent from 2011.
