打电视广告乃至候选人亲自露面,例如欧巴马总统9月17日在辛辛那提(Cincinnati)与选民见面,都能调动起支持者,但最有效力的助选方式是志愿人员通过打电话或登门拜访的方式与他们各自社区中的选民交谈,说明投票给他们所支持的候选人的理由。
在全美各地,这些志愿人员从现在起直到11月6日每天都会废寝忘食地长时间投入助选活动,因为他们知道每位选民都很重要,而他们争取到的选民很可能起到关键作用。

In "swing states" where polls suggest the presidential race is very close, grass-roots efforts by volunteers working within their own communities are vital to victory on Election Day.
Victory in the states described as “swing states” or “battleground states” will depend heavily on old-fashioned, labor-intensive campaign activities at the community level.
Television ads and even personal appearances by candidates, like President Obama’s in Cincinnati on September 17, can galvanize supporters, but the most effective elements of the campaign likely will be the phone calls and personal visits by volunteers who talk to voters in their own communities about why their candidate should be elected.
Across the nation, those volunteers, living on little sleep and prepackaged snack foods, will work long hours every day between now and November 6, knowing every voter counts and the voter they convince might make all the difference.
