(George
(Patrick
(George

Many visitors from abroad join vacationing Americans in exploring the variety of historical attractions the United States has to offer.
In the United States, summer is the traditional time for vacations. The ways in which Americans spend their leisure hours are as diverse as the land and its people. And many visitors from abroad join Americans in exploring the variety of historical attractions the United States has to offer.
Here Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip greet welcoming crowds from a horse-drawn carriage in historic Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, in May 2007.
From 1699 to 1780, Williamsburg was the capital of England's oldest, largest, richest and most populous colony, and then the seat of power in Virginia, the new United States' most influential state. It was in Williamsburg’s shops, taverns, government buildings, homes and streets that George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, George Mason and other Virginia patriots established the ideals — liberty, independence and personal freedom — that influenced the founding of the United States and inspired generations of Americans and others around the world.
More than 100 million visitors have toured Williamsburg's historic area since 1932, according to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s website.
