Harry Potter's most magical act might be what he did for children's literacy in America.
The story of an orphaned boy at an English wizarding school might not have seemed world changing in 1997, but 450 million books in 67 languages and countless engaged readers later, Harry Potter has a lot to be proud of for what he’s done for children’s literacy in the United States.
The only son of James and Lily Potter celebrates his birthday on July 31. By strangest coincidence, he shares the birthday with his creator, J.K. Rowling (above, with fans, marking the publication of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince).
According to a study commissioned by the series’ American publisher, 51 percent of American children age 5 to 17 polled said they did not read books for fun before they started reading Harry Potter. Three-quarters said Harry Potter had made them interested in reading other books. And Harry Potter readers in the United States also tended to start reading the series at age 9, a crucial period when childhood reading in America has been shown to taper off.
Happy birthday, Harry!

(Lily
