World Population Day, established in 1989, is observed annually on July 11. The theme of World Population Day 2012 is "universal access to reproductive health services," a goal shared by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who urged support for the well-being of women and families worldwide.
July 11 is World Population Day, an annual event aiming to raise awareness of global population issues. Established in 1989 by the United Nations, it was inspired by public interest in the Day of 5 Billion on July 11, 1987, approximately the date on which the world’s population reached 5 billion people.
The theme of World Population Day 2012 is “universal access to reproductive health services,” because reproductive health is crucial to achieving “a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled,” according to the United Nations Population Fund.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, noting that the world’s human population is expected to exceed 7 billion in October, said population growth “underscores the critical importance of addressing poverty, inequality, lack of education and poor healthcare.”
She added: “On this World Population Day, we must redouble our efforts for the health and well-being of women and families around the world.”
