Conserving America's Beautiful Rivers

The Chattahoochee River in Georgia is called “The Hooch” by the people who love it. This year it was designated as a National Water Trail by the U.S. Department of the Interior, the first in a network of waterways that will be added to America’s National Trails System.
The federal government helps local groups and states protect national trails so more people can enjoy them.
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar recently highlighted another effort to conserve and restore key rivers: America’s Great Outdoors River Initiative. The Interior Department is working with states, American Indian tribes and local groups in community-led efforts "to revitalize our nation's rivers and expand opportunities for people to fish, swim, boat and otherwise connect with the natural world," Salazar said.
There are 51 ongoing river projects, one in each state and the District of Columbia. One is the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and National Water Trail, seen above.
