志愿服务拓宽求职之路

在美国从近几年的经济下滑中复苏之际,志愿服务为正在寻找工作以便重返就业大军的人提供了机会。
4月19日,劳工部长希尔达·索利斯(Hilda Solis)在白宫庆祝“全国志愿者周”(National Volunteer Week)的活动中谈到了这一点。她说,乐于助人的人是雇主们愿意聘用的人。
索利斯指出:“如果你们通过辅导年轻人来支持一个社区组织,如果你们帮助一个低收入家庭申请‘工作所得税收抵免’(Earned Income Tax Credit),那么你们就是在练就重要的职场技能。志愿服务是让求职者既做好事又提高就业能力的途径。”但她同时表示,志愿服务不能取代有薪工作,也不能取代许多求职者要在21世纪复杂多样的经济中立足所需的进一步培训。

Volunteerism Is Possible Path to Employment
As the United States recovers from the recent economic downturn, volunteerism offers a possibility for people looking for a job to find their way back into the work force.
Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis delivered this message when she helped celebrate National Volunteer Week at the White House April 19. People who help others are people whom employers want to hire, according to the secretary.
“If you support a community-based organization by tutoring young people, if you help a low-income family apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit, then you’re sharpening important workplace skills,” Solis said. “Volunteerism is a way job-seekers can do good and become more marketable.” The labor secretary noted, however, that volunteerism is not a substitute for paid employment or for the additional training that many job seekers need to work in the complex 21st-century economy
