许多美国人认为他最能体现美国精神。
托马斯·杰斐逊出生在弗吉尼亚州（Virginia），是美国建国初期的第三位总统。他曾担任乔治·华盛顿（George Washington）政府的第一位国务卿以及约翰·亚当斯（John Adams）政府的副总统。
杰斐逊作为一位好学不倦的学者，吸收了启蒙时期（Age of Enlightenment）哲学家的许多思想，强调以理性和智慧促进社会进步。
1776年，他被推选为《独立宣言》（Declaration of Independence）的起草人。他要求《宣言》阐明的各项自由不仅适用于这个新生国家的每一位公民，而且适用于全世界所有的人。《宣言》指出，人人享有同等的权利，不论出身、贫富或地位高低。政府必须是人民的公仆，而不是其主人。

An insatiable learner, Jefferson absorbed the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment philosophers, with their emphasis on using reason and intellect to advance society.
In 1776, he was chosen to compose the Declaration of Independence, which he intended not only to enumerate liberties due to every citizen of the new nation, but to all people everywhere. The Declaration proclaims that all men are equal in rights, regardless of birth, wealth or status, and that the government must be the servant, not the master, of the people.
