(Empowering Women and Girls Through Sports Initiatve)的外交项目。

(World Conference on Women and Sport)上指出:“一再有事实说明,各行各业从事运动的妇女和女青少年往往能获得成功,女青少年参加运动与她们获得高等教育及就业直接相关。”

U.S. Women’s Team Shares Love of Soccer with Japanese Girls

U.S. forward Abby Wambach sets up a training drill for future Japanese stars.

Washington — The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team took a break from training for an international tournament in Japan to offer coaching to more than 50 Japanese girls in the region struck by the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster last year.

The U.S. women and Japanese girls got together on the Izumi soccer field in Sendai March 27 for a clinic and pickup matches. Sendai, on the eastern coast of the main island of Honshu, is in the region struck by the triple disaster. The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the site of the radiation leak, is in the vicinity.

The Japanese girls, who were recruited from local youth soccer leagues, watched the U.S. women work out, then joined them on the field for coaching tips and spirited pickup matches.

U.S. defender Heather Mitts talks strategy with two players who dream to play for Japan’s national team one day.

Afterward, U.S. star forward Abby Wambach said the chance to meet the girls and teach them the game was a gratifying experience for her. “This is the whole reason why we do what we do. And whenever we get moments like this — to get actually on the soccer pitch and play with the kids — it’s the best thing possible.”

The U.S. women’s team is in Japan to participate in the Kirin Cup, an international tournament organized annually in Japan by the Kirin Brewery Company. The U.S. government supported the clinic as part a diplomatic program known as the Empowering Women and Girls Through Sports Initiatve.

Ann Stock, assistant secretary of state for educational and cultural affairs, says sports can be a key tool for social and economic empowerment — especially for women and girls.

“The evidence consistently proves women and girls who play sports find success in all walks of life. Girls’ participation in sports correlates directly to higher education and employment,” Stock said to the International Olympic Committee’s World Conference on Women and Sport February 17.
