Obama’s Favorite Speeches Are on Unity

27 March 2012

Asked by a Korean university student about his favorite speeches, President Obama cites a common theme of unity in the speeches he's given.

The notion of people coming together in spite of political, racial and ethnic differences is important to President Obama.

The president, in answering a question from a student in South Korea, said unity has been a recurring theme in his speeches. Bo-yeon Suh, a Korean university student, was one of three finalists in a U.S. Embassy contest celebrating Obama’s visit, the prize for which was a written answer from Obama.

Suh asked, “Amongst all the public speeches you’ve delivered, what is your favorite speech?”

Obama’s answer avoids naming just one speech, but mentions a speech on race in America from 2008 and the Nobel Prize acceptance speech, in which he “spoke about how people and nations from across the world have a responsibility to understand the causes of war and to work for a just and lasting peace that makes life worth living.”

His attendance at the Nuclear Security Summit in South Korea is about unity too, the president said. “While the dangers of nuclear weapons are extraordinary, we can come together to harness the power of nuclear energy for peace — not war.”

Here, Obama meets students at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul March 26.
