(The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization)已确定全世界900多处景观具有“杰出的普遍价值”。

Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, is among more than 900 sites worldwide included in the UNESCO World Heritage List for their “outstanding universal value.” The man who wrote the Declaration of Independence and was the third president of the United States spent 30 years building and remodeling his plantation home.

“I am as happy no where else and in no other society,” Thomas Jefferson wrote of the home he built in Virginia, “and all my wishes end, where I hope my days will end, at Monticello.”

The home of the United States’ third president, Founding Father and author of the Declaration of Independence is linked with Jefferson’s world-changing ideas, said Leslie Greene Bowman, president of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation.

“Monticello has the distinction of being the only house in America inscribed in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List,” Bowman said. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has designated more than 900 sites worldwide as being of “outstanding universal value.” According to Bowman, “Monticello symbolizes the universal values of the new republic … and those of the rest of humanity who aspire to freedom and self-determination.”

Jefferson’s design for his plantation home, based on classical Greek and Roman architecture, both honors European tradition and foreshadows the cultural experimentation that would follow.
