“圣诞老人行动” （Operation

“Operation Santa” Helps Needy Kids

“Operation Santa” delivers toys and other gifts to needy
children in tiny, remote villages in Alaska. Santa brings the
goodies on a C-130 transport aircraft operated by Alaska’s Air
National Guard. Often he has to travel from the airstrip to the
village by dog sled. Shown here, a National Guardsman dressed as
Santa rides to the school in Venetie, Alaska, where he will present
toys, books and school supplies to children in the Neets’aii
Gwich’in Indian community of 300.
The Alaska Air National Guard’s Operation Santa has operated for
55 years. This year, the Air National Guard in Niagara Falls, New
York, started its own tradition by bringing Santa to a preschool
for students with special needs.
There are other Santa-based charity events throughout the United
States, such as those run by firefighters in Wichita Falls, Texas,
and police officers in Portales, New Mexico. The oldest event may
be in New York, where more than 50 Santas march in the annual
Sidewalk Santa Parade to raise money for a holiday food voucher
program for needy residents. It has taken place since 1902.
