Ellsworth Kelly is an internationally renowned American artist who is also celebrated for donating his art on behalf of the U.S. government and the American people. On July 4, 2011, Kelly’s Beijing Panels were installed at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. For this post, Kelly created two eighteen-foot-high wall sculptures, which have been placed next to the entrance to the consular building. Kelly designed the first panel in red, white, and blue to represent the United States. The second panel, installed on the opposite face of the wall, represents China with red and yellow—the colors of the Chinese flag. These works greet more than 2,000 Chinese citizens a day who enter the embassy for consular services, and are visual symbols of the ever-increasing educational, cultural, and commercial ties that link our two nations.
